Moa bone unearthed!
During our Topflite community tree planting day, our incredible Rachel made an unbelievable discovery.
Experts are suggesting that the bone is from a Pleistocene-era moa, potentially dating back between 2.6 million and 12,000 years, which is quite an extraordinary find. We are now awaiting further investigation from paleontologists at Otago University.
The trees we have planted are thriving after the summer we've experienced! We're hopeful for a favorable winter and spring to encourage even more growth.

What to do with all those fallen leaves?

Heather Loughlin has turned Amberwood Garden into a refuge for bugs and birds with this simple technique.

1. Gather them all and spread them on a large patch of lawn. When gathering leaves, I leave a strip of fallen leaves all around the perimeter of garden. This is then an undisturbed spot for insects to live until our mulched leaves settle.

2. Mow the spread leaves, over and over until quite fine. I use the catcher to stop them flying everywhere. Their volume will dramatically decrease.

3. When suitably fine, spread as a lovely mulch between plants. This will conserve water and suppress weeds and gradually break down into beautiful soils over time. I add a little compost to help this along.
