UPDATE: One of the dogs has died from this poisoning. Our hearts go out to the family. We are so sorry for your loss.
A Hidden Danger in Our Waterways β Please Protect Your Dogs!
After days of relentless rain and devastating landslips, toxic blue-green algae has begun to appear in our local waterways β particularly around Palm Beach Boulevard, Papamoa. What looks like harmless green scum or murky water can, in reality, be fatal.
For one local family, this danger has become heartbreakingly real. Their two young dogs have become violently ill after being near one of these waterways. Within hours, both were in severe condition and rushed to the vet. The illness is consistent with toxic algae poisoning, a fast-acting toxin that can shut down a dogβs organs and become fatal if not treated immediately.
There were no obvious warning signs. No smell. No visible danger. Just water.
Excessive rainfall and landslips wash nutrients and contaminants into streams, creating the perfect conditions for toxic algae to rapidly bloom. The poison attacks the liver and nervous system. Dogs can be affected simply by drinking the water or licking it from their paws or fur. Please spread this message to dog owners in the region.
Dogs should be kept on leads and prevented from swimming, drinking, or playing near any streams, drains, puddles, or standing water.
If exposure is suspected, seek veterinary help immediately. Acting fast can save a life. Please protect your dogs. We hope the dogs concerned pull through this terrible medical condition.
