“It’s absolutely mind boggling if you think about it.

Your horse gets absolutely nothing out of being competitive for you. Not a darn thing. Of course horses are bred for specific jobs, or they’re bred to be athletic to a certain degree. However, horses don’t wake up thinking about chasing cans, or cows, or flying over jumps.

They have no idea how much money is added to the pot. They have no idea that this is a qualifier. They have no idea that this is the short go.

And DESPITE us... DESPITE our nerves, our flaws, our incorrect ques, our huge emotions, they get the job done to their very best ability. Even when we fail them by letting our emotions get in the way, they come back and they try again. For US. Whoa. Let that sink in. If only we could all be so understanding.

To think of an animal that is forgiving and flexible enough to put up with the repetition of practice, the intense nerves of the rider, the stress of hauling and still meet you at the gate for scratches is MIND. BLOWING.

If you haven’t done so lately. Thank your horse.

If you’re successful, thank the horses that put you there and made you. Thank the horses that gave everything they had for you simply because you ASKED them to.

If you’re still on the journey to success, thank the horses that made you fall in love with your sport and who have helped give you the confidence to want to learn more and be better.

We can never stop learning as horsemen and horsewomen, and by continuing our education every horse in our future will be better off.

Next time you head to the arena leave your ego at the door and thank your horse!”

We're in a state of emergency here in the Top of the South.
I know of horses being evacuated and have read of one missing.
Be safe, and help thy neighbor when and where we can ❣️

👉The roads that are impassable have been made accessible for emergency services.
👉The Rapid Response Team (with building inspectors, geotechnical engineers) are assessing properties in Riwaka, Tapawera, and the Motueka Valley.

**Nelson Tasman Flood Event Saturday 28 June 2025 0630 update**

👉The emergency declaration remains in force.
👉Helicopters will be flying across the Motueka Valley this morning with Emergency Services to assess the damage.
👉Today Civil Defence, Councils and NZTA will be assessing damage to property, roads and bridges.
👉 Keep children and animals away from flooded areas.
👉Local and State Highways are still closed throughout the region.

🔸In the first light of day if people have welfare needs, evacuated - self or assisted or your property has been affected please call 03 5438400 to register your needs.

🔸While the rain lessened and rivers dropped overnight throughout the District, Civil Defence continued to monitor the state of the Motueka River throughout the night. Of particular interest was the lower reaches, in and around the State Highway 60 bridge.

🔸Overnight the Motueka Emergency Assistance and Information Centre assisted a small number of people (16), housed three and provided alternative accommodation to six others. The number of people who self evacuated to friends and family is unknown at this stage.

🔸Daylight provides Civil Defence, Councils and NZTA the first opportunity to fully assess damage to property, roads and bridges.

🔸The emergency declaration remains in force.

🔸There are still some areas of concern, and Civil Defence will be flying over a number of areas at first light to fully assess damage and to identify areas of immediate need with particular interest in the Motueka Valley.

🔸This event has seen levels in a number of rivers never seen before. It has been driven not so much by the amount of rain but the duration of the consistent rainfall, interspersed by significant bursts.

🔸Resident support
For many residents, it will be the first time they will be able to be fully assess any damage to their properties.

🔸If people have been evacuated, have a welfare need or property has been affected in any way please call the Council on 035438400
Note: If there is an immediate threat to please call 111 in the first instance

🔸If the house has been flooded keep children and animals away from flooded areas. Do not use electricity or gas until it has been checked and given the ok to use. Before you start cleaning up, take photos of your home and the damage caused as evidence to give your insurance company.

🔸Roads
The District’s roading network including State highways and local roads have been affected. There will be road closures throughout the District and these will remain in place for some time until repairs are undertaken. It is essential that people take notice of and respect the closures in place.

🔸Please limit travel to essential needs only as the roads will need to be surveyed prior to full opening.

NCC and TDC local roads map: https://roadinfo.ramm.com/nz/roadclosuremap.html...

🔸What to do after the event
If you require assistance in the immediate aftermath there are a number of agencies ready to assist.

Following the heavy rainfall and flooding we’ve received reports of properties that had buildings flooded. If water goes through a building, it can damage electrical outlets, and damp conditions can potentially cause other safety issues.|

🔸If you’ve had water go through your home or other building and need assistance, please call your local council who can send out Building Inspectors to check the structures and give you advice about how to make them safe.

I keep saying it, and I'll say it again ... My gosh I live in such an amazing community and am surrounded by such kind selfless people 🥰
Checking in on myself and my horses and offering emergency grazing up hill if I need it.
Both these places I can easily lead my horses to which is brilliant ❤️

Thankfully Huckleberry 🐑 and Billy 🐐 are already up the back hill, though stuck there until the back creek drops ... Which will be days away!

And thankfully the mares are in the first paddocks, before the middle culvert washout.

Shesh we've had some rain in the Top of the South!
Again I've got back flow flooding over the stopbank because my neighbor won't clean their drain 😠
Will have to get a digger in to rebuild the middle culvert crossing, though will build it up high this time so to not have this problem again.
Just before day break the waters had dropped over a metre, then 1.5 hours before high tide the waters lifted again in under 20 minutes.
Positive note, my arena is draining fantastic 🤩 and my chooks are safe with a moat around them!

Hope everyone is safe out there 🙏
