✨🐾 Time to Freshen Up 🐾✨

This little lady is an absolute sweetheart. Having been rehomed a few times, she was well overdue for a little glow-up—not just to look beautiful, but to help her feel comfortable and confident too.

Every dog deserves to feel their best, and it was such a pleasure to help her on that journey.

🪮 A thorough deshed to remove her thick brown undercoat.
🛁 A deep cleanse using Smith & Burton Detox Shampoo, lifting dirt and impurities while making the contrast in her black and white coat really pop. The hydrating conditioner added moisture and shine back into her coat and skin.
💨 A careful blow dry and brush out to remove loose coat and tangles. Like many Schnauzers, she wasn't too keen on having her legs handled, but with patience and kindness, we got there.
✂️ A full tidy of her body and legs for a smooth, neat finish, along with a refreshed face just as her owner requested.

This gorgeous girl walked out looking fresh, feeling comfortable, and ready to impress her mum. 💜🐾

✨🐾 A Double Coat Done Right 🐾✨

Many double-coated breeds should not be clipped unless there is a medical reason, as clipping can permanently alter the texture, colour, and insulating properties of their coat.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Pomeranian are two examples of breeds that are best maintained without clipping. Their double coats naturally help regulate body temperature by keeping them warm in winter and cooler in summer.

Instead of clipping, these breeds benefit from a thorough grooming routine:
🛁 A deep cleansing bath using quality shampoo and conditioner.
💨 High-velocity drying to loosen and remove the dead undercoat.
🪮 Careful brushing and combing to remove tangles, knots, and loose coat.
✨ A professional deshed to reduce excessive shedding, improve airflow through the coat, minimise matting, and allow the skin to breathe.
✂️ A neat scissor tidy around the feet, ears, tail, sanitary areas, and feathering to maintain a natural, tidy appearance.

Regular deshedding doesn't stop shedding completely, but it removes the loose coat that's ready to come out, meaning less hair around your home, a healthier skin and coat, and a more comfortable dog.

With regular maintenance every 6–8 weeks, these beautiful double-coated breeds can stay comfortable, healthy, and naturally stunning—without compromising the coat they were born with. 🩷🐶

I’m one lucky dog groomer to have Wendy from Groomwise Academy continually sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience. 💚🐾

This morning, I had the pleasure of being her sidekick while she presented to the Probus North Rotorua Club on how to keep your dog healthy, comfortable, and looking their best between grooming appointments.

There were so many thoughtful questions, plenty of laughs, and it was wonderful to see everyone so engaged. I'm sure everyone who attended went home with valuable tips they can put into practice and share with friends and family.

A huge thank you to everyone at the Probus North Rotorua Club for the warm welcome today. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the morning with such a fantastic group of people.

Over the hour, we explored how to keep our dogs healthy, comfortable, and looking their best between grooming appointments. We covered practical home grooming tips, recognising changes in your dog's skin and coat, and knowing when it's time to seek professional or veterinary advice.

Our gorgeous little Trixie was the star of the show, helping with a live line-brushing demonstration while we answered lots of thoughtful questions from the audience. I always enjoy hearing everyone's stories about their own dogs, and today's discussion was full of great conversations and genuine enthusiasm.

Thank you again to the Probus North Rotorua Club for inviting GroomWise Academy to present. It was a privilege to share my knowledge with such an engaged and welcoming community. Probus clubs provide wonderful opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to connect, learn, and enjoy interesting guest speakers, making today's event even more special.

✨🐾 A Few Weeks Late… But Worth the Wait! 🐾✨

Meet Toto, this adorable Toy Poodle! 💕

Toto is normally groomed on a regular schedule, but after some unexpected surgery, her grooming appointment had to be postponed. It was important that her surgical wound was completely healed to reduce the risk of infection and allow her to recover safely.

Once she was ready, she enjoyed a thorough cleanse followed by a deeply hydrating conditioner, leaving her coat beautifully soft, fluffy, and smelling amazing. 🛁✨

Unfortunately, those extra few weeks meant her coat had grown a lot. My goal was to keep her looking cute and fluffy, but there were simply too many tangles to brush out comfortably. The kindest and safest option was to clip her coat shorter and give her a fresh start.

The good news? We still managed to keep her adorable face and those wonderfully floofy ears! 😍🐶

💗 Sometimes a shorter clip isn't the style we were hoping for, but your dog's comfort and welfare will always come first. Regular grooming helps prevent painful matting and keeps your pup feeling their best.

🐾✨ Today's tip: Line Brushing ✨🐾

Line brushing is one of the most effective techniques for preventing mats and tangles. It helps you brush right through to the skin, rather than just smoothing the top of the coat. Spending just a few extra minutes doing this can make a huge difference to your dog's comfort and can even reduce the need for a shorter clip if knots begin to form.

💡 Top Tip: After brushing with the slicker brush, always follow with the metal comb. The comb should glide easily from the skin to the ends of the coat. If it catches, there's still a tangle hiding that needs a little more attention.

✨🐾 From Fluffy to Fresh! 🐾✨

Alfie arrived full of excitement... until it was time to hop onto the grooming table, where he promptly pancaked! 😂 It had been a little while since his last groom, and with the cooler weather his coat had grown long, thick, and extra cosy.

🐾 A pre-shave removed the bulk of his coat to make bathing and drying quicker and more comfortable.
🛁 He enjoyed a warm bath with Smith & Burton Detox Shampoo for a deep cleanse and fresh reset, followed by a hydrating conditioner to restore moisture and softness.
💨 After a thorough blow dry and brush out, his coat was perfectly prepped for an even finish.
✂️ We finished with a one-length trim all over, a tidy-up of his face, legs, and feet, while keeping his adorable little ears just as they are.

Alfie left looking smart, feeling lighter, and ready to take on winter in style! 🐶✨

Brock has a combination coat with a wiry outer layer and a soft undercoat, which benefits from regular deshedding to remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy.

Brock isn't a fan of big dogs, so thankfully, we rarely have large dogs in the salon, helping to keep his grooming experience calm and stress-free.

🪮Loose dead undercoat was gently removed to reduce shedding and improve airflow through the coat.
🛁 A warm hydrating bath followed by a nourishing conditioner cleansed the coat while helping lock moisture into the wiry hair.
💨 His coat was thoroughly dried and brushed through, making it smooth and easy to achieve a neat, even finish.
✂️ Around half the length was removed from his body, with a tidy-up of his face, ears, legs and feet to leave him looking smart while still keeping his natural style.
💅 His nails were trimmed to improve comfort, support healthy posture and movement, and prevent them from becoming overgrown.

🐶 Brock was a pleasure to groom, and with regular maintenance, his unique coat will stay healthy, comfortable and easy to manage.
