⭐️ CETRC - 60km - 28th Sept ⭐️
Lucas successfully completed his first ride of the season last month. We have a slightly different approach this season, maximising training opportunities in the hills and at home, and competing less but more efficiently. So far so good!

Lucas and Tahi run great together, which is a bonus for Andrea and I, so we will be capitalising on that this year too! Both horses had exceptional lag times, HRs, and As throughout their books.

Very happy overall with the start of (hopefully) a great season!

🌟 Clayton - Mackenzie - 64km, Dec 30th 🌟

What a way to end 2023!
By far the toughest ride we have done this season, but always enjoyable as it’s a chance for my flat-Canterbury-land horse to compete on hills.

Despite breaking two stirrup buckles, having to divert to base adding a few kms, and a represent at vetting, Lucas managed to complete his final vetting in under 3 minutes with As in his book, really well metabolically, and sneaking a 3rd place. Very proud of him and how he pulled through.

As it’s the end of the year I need to thank and acknowledge our team behind Lucas and I this season, as we couldn’t do it without them!
⚒️ Our amazing farrier Shawn Valpy, who has been on board for years now, always keeping him sound and happy for me
🐴 Paula from PureEquine, our body worker. Paula has supported us through thick and thin, always lending an ear and her hands to help keep lucas happy
💉 Dani from Canterbury Equine Clinic for always being happy to be a helpful ear and going above and beyond to help Lucas this season and keep him comfortable.
😊 Andrea for always being a training and riding buddy, and for nothing ever being an issue, including loaning your gear to help us succeed! And to Marga for riding with us!
👨‍👩‍👦 My amazing family - especially my Husband - for being the rock at home while I’m chasing goals, and the ear on the end of the phone when I’m teary or celebrating.

Next up is SI Champs in 2 weeks - Distance TBC
Bring on 2024 and reaching more goals!

42km
1050m of elevation
600m climb
7.5hours

This by far was the most challenging hill ride I’ve attempted! Considering 40km would on average take us 3 hours, our time to complete this is a credit to how tough it was.
So proud of both of our boys Andrea! They gave and gave all day.

Beautiful station, beautiful riding, beautiful sights. Thanks Blue Mountain Station

🌟 CETRC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 2023 🌟

What a great end to a difficult season. I wasn’t able to compete because of my ankle, but luckily Marga came to the rescue and rode Lucas with Andrea and Tahi in the 60km for 3rd place 🥉. Thanks for taking such good care of him! He’s been barefoot for 5 weeks and managed to get round in a great time despite a bit of stone, and is still happy and not foot sore.

🎉 We were able to celebrate success all round between our 3 camps with 100% completion between Zoey winning the 160km Junior, Marga coming 3rd in the 120km and the 60km, and Andrea 2nd in the 60km CTR. 🎉

Lucas arrived on base and was eating straight away, and was keen to go! After a year of trying to sort his ulcers and behaviour at rides we’ve finally made it and I have my horse back. Bring on next season!

Huge congratulations to everyone who competed and completed over the weekend. There were a bunch of 160km buckles given out which is the pinnacle of our sport. It was amazing being able to watch everyone succeed.

ABOUT MANUKA HONEY
Manuka honey has a unique antimicrobial activity and has been proven to have a topical broad-spectrum antimicrobial action, effective against over 60 strains of bacteria of both gram positive and gram negative, and includes resistant strains too!

These antimicrobial properties are further enhanced by the presence of methylglyoxal (MGO) in Manuka honey. MGO is responsible for most of the antimicrobial activity of Manuka honey and is referred to as its Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). This is a standardised rating system for measuring the level of antimicrobial potency of Manuka honey on a scale from 5-26. As the UMF grade rises, so does the price and it can become very expensive.

Various studies have shown that a rating of 10 or more is usually all that is required to provide sufficient antimicrobial activity in the wound environment. This is useful to know when there are financial constraints, as using a lower UMF may ease financial burden without risking failure of treatment.

For equine wound care select a Manuka honey product that has a UMF of 10 or higher. A UMF of 10 corresponds to a MGO of 263.

Although most interest is focused on its antimicrobial property, more recent evidence indicates that Manuka honey also has great anti-inflammatory effects.
Manuka Honey increases production of inflammatory cytokines in leukocytes, aiding the growth of new epidermal tissue and blood vessels, which encourages the formation of healthy granulation tissue.

Manuka honey works best when applied ASAP after injury. Always have some on hand in your tack or vet box!

We’ve had a wee hiatus due to an unfortunate syndesmotic and ATFL ankle sprain in December. This hasn’t been our season between ulcers and injuries, but hey, that’s horses!
Today was my third attempt at riding since the sprain and smiles all round! Pain is at least 50% better, and I can load through my right leg now.
Next week is a review with the specialist to see if surgery is needed, and then we will decide if we can compete at Nationals over Easter.

This season went from goals of completing a 120km at nationals, dropped to 100km, then hopes for just becoming open at 80km. Now even if I’m able to ride by Easter I’ll be happy. There’s been lots of emotion and heartbreak, but hopefully we will come back stronger next season! 👌🏼💪🏼

Thanks to all my horsey friends who have supported us this season, regardless of the outcomes ❤️

Meet Pebbles and Oddie, two of our new arrivals 😍🫶🏻😍
They are settling in well with their mate Oki, making the most of the grass before it dries off.
Welcome Brya and the team! Having a foal around is the best!

⭐️ Canterbury Champs ⭐️

Covid and renovations have kept us a bit quiet on the competing front lately, but we managed to make it out to Cust for Champs this weekend.
Lucas has struggled with eating when away, so we stepped back and did a cruisy 40km, reducing his load physically so he could work on his emotional stress. We travelled up Friday and stayed until Sunday arvo to try help him out.

All and all a very successful weekend!

🥇Lucas won the 40km! We rode this mostly on our own but did have some lovely company to start
⚡️ Lucas ate some apples and picked at grain from when we arrived, and put his head into his bucket as soon as we finished so that was a huge win for us!
⚡️ Sunday morning Lucas ate all his feed and asked for more, which hasn’t happened since last year. So that’s awesome!
🥇 Our good friends Andrea and Tahi won their 64km CTR class! It was so fun helping crew another team through a successful ride.

Hopefully 2023 will bring a little more success for Lucas and I and if he keeps eating well we can start stepping back up to the multi loop open rides again. Overall I’m stoked with how the weekend went!

Thank you to Canterbury club for such an awesome weekend, and all the amazing sponsors, including Norton Equestrian who sponsored our event 🙏🙏

Last weekend Lucas and I completed another 40km and placed 2nd (by a whisker 🫣) and came away with best managed! Best managed is a data based award🥇 and the lowest score wins. It calculates HRs, lag times, time behind the leader, all our vetting scores and rider weight. I was very proud of lucas and stoked his training is paying off and showing in the vet ring.

Labour weekend was supposed to be our first open 80km, but I’ve decided to do one more 40km. Hi tummy had reacted badly to the grass this spring and it’s causing eating issues at rides. Hopefully he eats well this weekend, and we can step up on December at East Coast!

Thanks Petria Haigh Equestrian for a great ride last weekend!

First ride of the season ✅ Winner winner chicken dinner!

Lucas was a champ yesterday. We haven’t tried a mass race start since this time last year, and he was off like a champ, and maintained the lead to win it. 40km in 2hr57min, with a nice quick vet time at the end.
This was the fastest I’ve asked him to go and he really pulled through.
We were going to ride again today, but his DOMS is bothering him, and seeing as he did so well yesterday I decided to give him a break. It’s a tough call but it’s only the start of the season and his comfort comes first!

Bring on the 22/23 season!
