Meet Russell - our boss gelding and inspiration for Hidden Valley Farm 🐴
Russell has been with us for many years now and he holds a special place in our hearts! He was rescued alongside his 2 best mates, Pepe and Vicky, who sadly passed on. Out of the trio, Russel is the last standing - and he’s living his golden years to the fullest 💛
In his past life, Russell was a true adventurer - a seasoned packing horse who travelled the South Island. Now in his 20s, Russell is fully retired and he’s earned every bit of his peaceful farm life.
Russell suffers from laminitis, a painful and recurring condition that affects the sensitive tissues in a horse‘s hoof. But since coming to Hidden Valley Farm his health has improved dramatically. The low-sugar, high-roughage grass and the natural hills keep him strong and stable.
Despite his past challenges, Russell is thriving. He’s the boss gelding on the farm - calm, wise and totally adored. We love him deeply 🧡

Stay tuned as we introduce more of our animals who call Hidden Valley Farm their home.

As a family striving for self-sufficiency lifestyle, we also operate a small, self-funding, not-for-profit farm animal companion sanctuary.

Over the years, we have received numerous requests to provide perminant refuge for animals in need. Our mission is to provide a permanent homes, while supporting their human caregivers during challenging times. Regrettably, we are currently facing financial constraints due to hiked expenses, including excessive hay and hard feed costs, as well as expenses for covers, bedding, shelter, and other necessities. We appreciate the support of our generous donors, who enable us to do what we do currently. However, we can only accept new animals from owners who are willing to sponsor their pets' needs. We will provide the necessary care, with the help of volunteers, (who we also accommodate and feed).

If you or someone you know requires temporary or long term care for their farm pet during a time of crisis and is willing to support their pet's needs, we can offer assistance and bridge the gap.

We also welcome individuals who can contribute their time and skills for fundraising pronects, book sales, and animal grooming etc. Any donations are always greatly appreciated.

We send love to those struggling due to the recent floods in our area.

It was lovely to have Margarette and her son Sammy visit Hidden Valley Farm NZ a couple of weekends ago. Some months ago Sammy, who raised a rooster called Frizzy, (or Frazel as hes often called) was unable to keep him due to his morning glory calls, so they rehomed him here. Sammy has an incredible bond with Frizzy and they reunited like they'd never been apart.

Congratulations Sharon. Your baby is so beautiful. We've named her after Duckies original rescuer; Leyla Jade to keep Ducky's story alive. Born on Friday 13th the same day Ducky passed away. I'm sure Duckys energy transfered bodies to continuevto entertain us.

I am deeply saddened to inform everyone of our followers and supporters that Duckie didn't recover after surgery and passed away. No one expected this out come and there could be a 100 reasons for this. Wecwill never know. I'm obviously devistated and really miss his presence in the yard. Telling his original rescuers was tough and those who sponsored the treatment, really tough but whe I finally had the strength to look at Leyla Jade reply, I melted with her level headedvresponse. Layla has given me permission to share her reply:

Oh Terri, im so sorry. Ramon and I both stand by that you made the best decision to give her the surgery. It was that or live a life in pain. She has had the best life anyone could have imagined, how many ducks can say they have travelled the world? And we could not have asked for a better place to have her last days. She was so unbelievably happy when i saw her last. All she has ever wanted was a place to boss everyone around and do whatever she pleased. You gave her that, and i am forever grateful. She wasn’t destined to live from the beginning, I found her and gave her an adventure and you helped with that. I have so much love for that little duck, she was such an important part of my life. She has taught me so very much and I am so happy that I get to keep the memories forever. I am devistated, but I want to celebrate how far she had come with how little she was given. I am so sorry that we are not there to hold this, I feel horrible that this is now your pain. But I thank you for everything that you have done and everything you keep doing. Sending big warm hugs xx

NeNellie Lättmane of our special volunteers and donation gifters also had a similar sentiment.

I want to thank those who supported our give a little campaigne and all our supporters for your ongoing help and kindness.

R.I.P little Duckie
