🚩Health Notice – Ashley Rakahuri Estuary
Just a timely reminder to everyone who uses the Ashley Rakahuri Estuary, whether you’re fishing, partaking in water sports or gathering mahinga kai, that there is a risk of faecal contamination in this area.
🦠Environment Canterbury monitor the water quality of the Estuary, and the site has had a long-term grade of poor since monitoring began in 2015. At the advice of the National Public Health Service (NPHS) – Canterbury, Environment Canterbury have installed signage warning people of risks associated with water contact and fishing/ shellfish gathering.
🦆🐄 Previous testing has shown the contamination sources to be birds and ruminants (sheep, cows), likely transported into the river after rainfall.
While we will continue to issue seasonal access permits for the purposes of boat launching or retrieval, fishing, whitebaiting and mahinga kai gathering, it’s important to be aware of the potential health risks and use your own judgement.
Please refer to the LAWA website below for information on the water quality at the Estuary or contact Environment Canterbury or NPHS for further information: https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/canterbury-region/coastal/ashley-riverrakahuri-at-estuary #:~:text=Special%20Status-,Special%20Status,the%20water%20at%20this%20site.
