My beautiful bookend babes are heading off to be desexed tomorrow. Eugenie and Ruby, the last of my breeding cats, (apart from Owen, who is daddy to them both) so it's definitely the end of an era. 🥲

Hi Mainelanders Family, thought it's about time for a bit of an update. So a few months ago I mentioned scaling back my breeding program and since then, it's turned into a full retirement from breeding. The process has been slow and methodical but I am at peace with my decision and know it's the right time to stop for me. Thats not to say I won't ever breed again and I will still be here for my M* family always.
So I now just have 2 girls to rehome. Eugenie and Ruby. Both are still currently entire and called last week, so if any registered breeders are interested, please contact me directly at [email protected].
Video is of Ruby.
Eugenie was mum to the last Mainelanders litter and had 10 healthy babies on Christmas day. The best final present ever. 🥰
I will now be disabling messages on here as I'm still getting kitten enquiries coming through. If any of my Mainelanders family need me, my email address is still live and won't be shut down. Big hugs, Jo.

Explains it perfectly. 🙃

Breeders often burn out. Not because they stop loving their cats — quite the opposite. But because breeding becomes a never-ending workday. A life without weekends, without vacations, without anyone to share the burden with. You wake up and fall asleep thinking about the cattery. Cleaning, feeding, care, buyers, whelping, illnesses, photos, marketing — it never stops. It’s not an eight-hour shift. It’s a life where you are needed 24/7. And each year, it gets harder. More cats. More kittens. More families needing advice, help, updates. There’s no real vacation — no one to entrust your animals to. You can’t get sick — there’s no one to replace you. Sometimes you meet golden buyers who truly love their kittens. And those moments feel truly rewarding. But sometimes, when a kitten doesn’t match someone’s perfect dream, the disappointment quietly turns back at you. Instead of seeing the soul they brought home, some people project their unmet expectations onto the breeder. Over time, breeding built a deep layer of anxiety in me. Every new message, every new email, I open with a deep breath — not because I expect something bad, but because I know how much emotional responsibility comes with every life I help to raise. Last year, I created the DBE program — hoping to rediscover inspiration. For a while, it helped. But today, even those new hopes don’t feel as bright. When you give everything of yourself, year after year, without real rest, without someone to lean on — the exhaustion finally sinks in. A quiet, deep exhaustion no new project or kitten can heal. Because all this time, you weren’t just raising kittens — you were giving away little pieces of your soul.

I just want to say a huge thank you to my beautiful Mainelanders family. The sheer number of people who have reached out, either by commenting, sending me a private message or calling me, has blown my mind. The outpouring of love, support and genuine care is hugely appreciated.

For those who have messaged me regarding a kitten or older cat, I will be in touch as soon as I can. I'm currently away with my other job but know that I appreciate every single one of you. 🥰

Hi Mainelanders Family. This might end up being a long post but it's one I need to share with you all. I've been breeding these beautiful cats nearly 15 years and it's brought me no end of joy and love, making new friends and community in our mutual appreciation of the magnificent Maine C**n.

But all good things come to an end and I'm at the beginning of scaling down my breeding business. Rising costs and doing this alone means it's hard for me to get away, do the fun stuff and feel like I have balance in my life. For those who don't know, I also work full time so after a long day at work (often a 11-12 hour day by the time i walk in the door) I then have more hours to put in spending time with the cats, cleaning, feeding them, grooming them etc and then need to think about feeding and cleaning myself often at 9.30pm! And then it all starts again 6.30am the next day.
The toll on me, my house, my finances and spending time with friends and family has become too hard to juggle plus the loss of special cats I've bred to cancer and HCM recently has broken my heart. 😭

I will start desexing some older cats and finding them loving homes to be someone's special baby soon so if you are in a position to home one of my precious pusses, please reach out. ☺️
I'm crying as I write this knowing it's been coming for a while but hoping I could find the energy to keep going a little longer. 🥺
And special appreciation to Emma Cook and Fergus Lobb for being amazing housesitters, giving me the chance to get away and have a break when I can. It's been a lifesaver. 🥰

I also still have 2 gorgeous tortie and white kittens and a black and white boy looking for homes so again, please pm me if you are interested.
