Fireworks are scary and stressful for some pets ..
As we come into firework season and Halloween this weekend, it pays to familiarise yourself with these tips..
Halloween .. watch out for extra lollies, chocolate and treats that children may leave lying around the house or that your dog may be tempted by! Sometimes it’s the wrappers as well.. be extra vigilant 🐾🐶
There are some downloadable posters you can find online to place at your door or gate that will deter the Halloween trick and treaters if you have a spooked or barking dog, A great idea to prevent the extra visitors 👻
Fireworks and party season .. sometimes we can’t predict when fireworks will happen so be prepared.
Here are some easy ways to make your pets feel more comfortable, and ensure proper safety:
Make sure your pet has a well-fitted collar with an ID tag and is microchipped with current contact information.
Exercise your dog early so they are physically and mentally tired.
Set up a “safe zone” for your pet, preferably in an interior room or on the lowest level of your house. Place your pet’s kennel or bed in the room, as well as some toys. Once fireworks begin, put your pet in the room and close the door until the fireworks end.
Close curtains, doors, and windows to limit noise exposure.
Turn on the TV or a radio have the volume up loud to distract.
Consider using a calming spray or collar.
Consider using a compression shirt.
Discuss pet anxiety medications with your veterinarian if the other options don’t work.

If you have a puppy you are in a great position to desensitise and help your puppy learn to cope with firework noise.. there is a YouTube video that plays fireworks and other noises for puppies, start playing it slowly now and build it up until your puppy doesn’t react anymore ..
Horses 🐎 need checking regularly, making sure they are safe and sound after any firework event.
