Ruby along with her brother and cousin have been helping handle and train the show alpacas for grandparents Eric & Debbie Lister at Thief of Hearts Alpaca Stud.

Field day at Thief of Hearts Alpaca Stud.

Date: 17th February 2024
Venue: 110 Waituna Road, RD 2, Pahiatua – Behind the Tui Brewery in the Wairarapa.
Cost: Free to all AANZ members and $10 per person for non AANZ members

This course will appeal to everyone with an interest in alpacas, from breeders to lifestyle owners to those looking to add alpacas to their lifestyle block. This is a rare opportunity to visit the Thief of Hearts alpaca stud.
Eric Lister has been breeding alpacas for 25 years and currently has over 400 alpacas with over 100 cria expected this season. There is a very good chance there will be cria born on the day.

Weather: The course will run regardless of the weather.
Time: 09.30 Start with a coffee
10.00 Start Alpaca Evaluation Course
Lunch: 12.00
Finish: 3 to 4pm

The day comprises:
(1) Alpaca Evaluation Training Course
What to look for when choosing an Alpaca to purchase and how to evaluate every alpaca in your own herds.
You will be given a 40 page spiral bound work book that contains the entire course and all the information on Breed Standards and how to evaluate your alpacas.

(2) Lunch
For those that would like to try this, an alpaca burger will be there for you to try.

(3) Walk around the Farm
This walk and talk will let you see how a working alpaca farm operates. You will be able to ask any questions about anything you see on this walk.

(4) Alpaca Matings
Eric will join a group of girls with some of his stud males and explain why he has chosen these match-ups. If you have not seen alpacas mate before, this is very interesting.

(5) Cria Evaluation
Some mothers and their cria will be in yards so you can look at how the Thief of Hearts alpaca stud breeding program is progressing.

(6) Cup of Tea/Coffee or a cold beer before you travel home.
