👉 Foster carer needed - Located Timaru
Short video in comments

Ginger's owners reached out for help to find him a new home asap. He is 1 year old, Border Collie/Huntaway. They got him at 4 weeks old from a farm.

A volunteer met Ginger today, this is her feedback:

Ginger was lovely and friendly and he is all about a good cuddle.
He dreams of being an indoor dog.
He's not had any training, knows his name but nothing else.
He would benefit from an experienced Collie owner who is willing to put the time and effort into training, potentially even dog sports (agility/Rally-O).
Reportedly good with kids
Tendency to jump fences if they aren't high enough.
Up to date on Vax.
Neutered.
Microchiped.
Had to leave before I took him home with me! He's just lovely.

Please message us if you can help with foster care.

❤️ Our most beautiful natured, delightful deaf pup Whetū has had some very unusual behaviours, he's been struggling, it's something we haven't seen before.

He had a specialist appointment this morning and he most likely has a Liver Shunt (have a google). He will be going for an ultrasound next week to explore the extent of this.

If anyone is happy to donate a bag of Royal Canin Liver Diet (Hepatic) we would be very grateful. 🙏 Edit to add... ohh he has also put in a special request for antlers or hooves for chewing - he loves them!

Whetū is fostered in Christchurch. His foster family have been amazing. ✨️🐾

❤️ Eddy (was Joey) was in the Oamaru Pound, we needed to find him a foster carer, a super one was found in Christchurch (thanks Bex!). He was eventually adopted to a fabulous couple... here's an update!

Four Years of Fast Eddy 🐾

It’s hard to believe that next week marks four years since we adopted Eddy.

Eddy is our second dog. After losing our last dog, I started following Pound Paws on Facebook — and when I came across a post about Eddy, I thought he might be a good fit. He was being fostered in Christchurch at the time, so we packed up and made the six-hour drive from Queenstown to meet him. Needless to say, we didn’t return home alone.

From the moment we met him, we knew he was an absolute lunatic — but I’ve honestly never met a smarter dog in my life.

During the week, Eddy has a full-time job just like the rest of us. Every morning, he heads to the office with my partner. His key responsibilities include: checking that all staff are doing okay, hoovering up any crumbs after smoko, and politely requesting pats and ear scratches. He even has his own office bed! Somehow, despite his busy schedule, he still manages to squeeze in a lunchtime walk.

On weekends, he transforms into full adventure mode. He comes hiking, biking, skiing — you name it. He even has his own backpack and sleeping bag!

It took him a couple of years to get into swimming, but once he figured it out, we couldn’t keep him out of the water — even when it’s -3°C outside.

The local neighbourhood kids call him “Fast Eddy” because he’s often spotted zooming after sticks, balls, rabbits… and occasionally chasing jet boats!

For a dog who wasn’t originally allowed on the furniture, he now spends most evenings lounging on the sofa or stretching out in front of the fire. Tough life.

He’s certainly got us wrapped us around his little paw — and we wouldn’t change a thing.

A huge thanks to Charlie and Pound Paws for letting us adopt this absolute legend of a dog.

* Posting on behalf of, we have not met Gin. Details we have been given:

It’s with a heavy heart that we’ve made the difficult decision to rehome our sweet girl, Ginny (aka Gin). She’s a 3.5 year old, spayed Jack Russell x Foxy. Chipped and up to date on all her vaccinations. Located Pleasant Point.

Life on our lifestyle property has proven to be more than we can manage with a young family, and Gin deserves the time and attention that we simply can’t give her right now.

Gin is a loving and loyal dog who bonds deeply with her people once she gets to know them. She thrives on attention and enjoys getting plenty of pats. She’s great with other dogs and loves meeting new people, although she can get excited initially, she quickly calms down. Her recall is good, though it can falter if she’s on a mission, particularly if she’s chasing something.

Unfortunately, Gin is not stock-proof, and she has a history of chasing lambs, sheep, chickens, and even cats if given the chance. She can also wander if not kept under close supervision. Because of this, she would be best suited to a secure, well-fenced property (stock fencing is not enough) where she can safely roam without the temptation to chase.

Gin does get on well with cats that she knows, especially if they’re confident and don’t run away from her. She’s wonderful with older children, but she can be a bit nippy toward younger ones who don’t always understand her boundaries.

Seeking an active home who knows the breed and can give her the time, space, and training that she deserves.

* Adoption process - Application form, property visit, vet check of previous pet care.

❤️ For Adoption ✨️🐾

Mollie came from Timaru, she has been in our care for 2 months. At the start of this month she had a dental, 6 teeth extracted. Her bloods are all good and she is ready to find a very special retirement home. Fostered Christchurch.

Mollie, Bichon cross, a delightful sweet wee girl. While she is aged 15, her age is not readily evident and she is bright, active and loves her walks.

Mollie has fitted in well to a home with three other dogs and a cat. She gets on well with the others although can be protective of food if one of the others is too close to something she sees as hers. She is very food driven and has learned to sit since being with us… as long as there is a treat being offered! While the vet is happy with Mollies current waistline, food does need to be monitored as she will scavenge anything she can find.

Mollie loves going out on regular walks although these can be slow as she is very keen to smell the world as we pass by.
Mollie would be fine to live with a family, and with other dogs and cats although she is likely to prefer to be the only dog if possible as she loves attention and likes to be the centre of it!

She sleeps on the bed currently and loves to snuggle. She enjoys one or two small toys and was very well behaved at the groomers. Mollie would not be good in a situation where chickens run loose. She ignores my chooks who are housed in a large coop but she has had a go at chasing the neighbour’s free range chooks.

Mollie is happy to do her business when she's out and about, however she likes her comforts and needs to be strongly encouraged to toilet outside if it cold or wet! She's so glad to be inside, previously was an outside dog.

🩷 Ideally someone home during the day would be lovely for Miss Mollie.
* Adoption process - application form, property visit, vet check of previous pet care.

If interested please message us about your home and why you think that Mollie would thrive in your care.

Posting on behalf of (we have not met them).
Please share to help them find great home/s.

Details we have been given:

Both Poppy and Zorro were originally adopted from the SPCA in Dunedin 4 years ago.

Location: Palmerston, Otago

(Poppy)
DOB 20/4/21
American Bulldog X
Neutered female/Microchipped/Vaccinated - up to date
Smart, high energy, loving, loves to go in the car, loves the beach and going for walks although she does pull on the lead and
Needs management of behaviour around other animals. She would definitely need an experienced owner.
She is a beautiful girl, has had surgery to get head of femur removed but she is very active.
She has been around my kids but would need to be around a calm house so teenagers be good.
Poppy is not experienced with other animals definitely no cats and we have only lived residential.
Poppy is a sweet girl but she can get a little nervous around new people at first but she soon warms up and then gets a little too boisterous!
She’s not great with meeting new dogs despite our efforts.

DOB (Zorro) 1/12/2021
English Springer Spaniel/ GSP
Neutered male/microchipped/Vaccinated- up to date
Good with all kids and other animals full of beans.
He’s just a cool dog. Lots of energy but easy going nature. Loves people and cuddles and pats. Such a sweet loving guy.

He is good on recall. He hates the lead. I used to take him to the beach and mostly leave him off coz he’s just so easy going.
Good at meeting new people and new dogs.
Not from a cat home so I don’t know how that would go.
But generally he’s just a cool dog. He is super loving and just a big sweetheart.

Sadly change in circumstances, no longer able to have them. Can be homed separately.

If interested please email us about your home.

➡️ Take It Slow ⬅️ Please read‼️

They are confused.
Many may feel vulnerable and their body language can give mixed messages that we may misread.
Those first few days can help shape everything .
Whether it's a new puppy or an older dog joining your family....there's a lot of information to take in.
It can be overwhelming.

Accidents on the carpet?➡️Completely normal when you are both adjusting to signals each other gives.

Changing foods?➡️As much as you may dislike the food they came with...their system is already under a bit of stress.
Changing now can add to those accidents in your lounge, hall.....or those sneaky "presents" you'll discover behind the couch.
Wait a week or two then slowly transition.
This gives their body more time to adjust and settle.

Go slow.
Breathe.
Give some space when needed.
Take care of yourself....it's a big change for you and your family too.

Settling takes time and patience but the confidence it builds?
So worth it !

❤️ Precious Trev 💜✨️🐾

"We have fostered Trev for a year now, he is a darling 12 year old retired working dog. When he first came to us, he really struggled to understand what had happened to him, and he grieved for his family and his life on the farm for a good few weeks. Slowly, he adjusted. He was easy to toilet train, was so good to take on walks, and I know he appreciated getting pain relief for his arthritis, and also the removal of some painful teeth.

He could walk for an hour no problem at first, but now has slowed down to about 40 mins a day, and he has just had a heart murmer diagnosed so is on medication for that.

He loves to sleep on the bed at night and often dreams of chasing sheep, at top speed if his legs are anything to go by. He suffers from partial seizures now and then, but has recovered quickly every time so far.

Trev is a super chill dog, very gentle, and quiet for the most part, except for the odd 'awoo' when he is excited for breakfast. He does like to bark at birds in the yard, so now he comes to university with me where he gets pats from students missing their pets at home. We love him very much, even if my other dogs sometimes dont understand his lack of respect for personal space.

If there is anything I have learnt from fostering a retired working dog, it's for farmers to retire them sooner rather than later, so the emotional and physical adjustment to pet life is worth their while. They are amazing creatures who have worked hard their whole lives and deserve the best treatment when they start to slow down. Time with Trev is very precious to us and we are very grateful that the farmer gave him to Pound Paws, and that PPR covers his medical and other needs so he can have a settled and enriched final few years." 💓

❤️ Adopted! Saffron ✨️

"Over a year ago, my life changed with four simple words; “Bring her to me”.
It wasn’t until after she arrived that I found out I was her only option. It wasn’t until after she arrived that I discovered how hard her life had been.
I said I wasn’t ready to adopt. I said I couldn’t go through having a dog with health issues again. I said she would be with me a short time. That turned into saying she was a long-term foster.
Everyone knew before I did, it took me a while to catch up.

Yesterday there was a moment where I just stopped and watched her laying in front of the fireplace. In the beginning, the first time she was seen in front of the fire she jumped up, slinked down low, tail tucked all the way in, and she ran to hide. But here she was, enjoying the warmth without a single worry. I still praised her, I don’t want her to forget.

The journey we’ve been on has been long, our baby steps of walking up and down the driveway have turned into exploring town, going to the look out, making friends and that one time I slipped over and was dragged face down across a park (No one can ever say I don’t have a death grip on that leash). We did it side by side, and I grew in ways I never thought I could. She helped me pick up the pieces of my heart, and I think I helped her pick up the pieces of hers.

You know how there's the saying "If it's too good to be true, then it probably is" That's how I felt about the thought of adopting Saffron. That it was just too good to be true, so something was going to come along and ruin it, because it's simply too good to be true. How could something so wonderful come into my life? Who gets that lucky? So, when I got my adoption certificate. I cried like a freaking baby, my "too good to be true" was true, she's my girl, the universe was no longer able to come along and mess it up. I wake up and she is there with me. I get to have my "too good to be true" for the next 10+ years.

Saffron, my too good to be true."

💓 Congratulations to you both... we're delighted! ✨️🐾

Our Story

Davey was found at Mount Misery (North Otago) tied to a fence in March, 2015, aged 9 years. Most likely a lost/abandoned pig hunting dog. He was painfully thin, had infected puncture wounds under his neck, deep scars over his body. Davey also had broken Canines with the roots exposed. He was very hand shy and desperate to be loved. I fostered, then adopted him. He could easily jump a 6ft fence, but only to get to me, so we always leave him inside if he needs to be left on his own. He is loved, well fed, healed, and enjoys sleeping by the fire. He guards the property and the car.... but when out and about, he is friendly, calm and approachable. Davey is great with children, other dogs and farm animals. He is a great mentor and very tolerant of the numerous foster dogs coming through our doors. We later found out more history about him, his real name was “Razzle” he had several pig hunting homes (some very rough handling and neglect) and had also produced several litters, we were told that he was worth a couple of grand in his prime days. About a year later, 7 dogs were uplifted from a property due to severe neglect and brought into the pound, they were emaciated, I always thought that a couple of them looked like Davey, and yes, they were some of his off spring :( Dogs usually end up in the pound through no fault of their own. They get 7 days for their owner to claim them. Many are unclaimed and by law are able to be destroyed. Times are changing and many council pounds have adoption processes and rescue organisations that they work in with to help give the dogs a second chance. Dogs that arrive at the pound can be very stressed, bored and lonely. Some arrive skinny and afraid. Others are full of bouncy, enthusiastic energy and just need mental/physical stimulation, time/training, and dedicated owners! Pound dogs are not bad dogs, they have usually been failed by their owners by not having the basics provided for them. Many were pampered as puppies (or not) but when they get older and bigger, the novelty wears off, and it’s the dogs that pay the price. Many miss out on vital socialising, basic daily enrichment and safe containment. We rescue the dogs that are able to be released into our care and take over legal ownership. All of our dogs are de-sexed, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated, micro-chipped and registered. There is an adoption fee/donation for each dog to help us with these costs. We temperament test our dogs and have an adoption process to help us match them up to the home that best suits their needs - it's never first in first served. We sometimes work in with a behaviourist if required for dogs with special needs. The adoption process includes an application form, a property visit to ensure safe containment, meetings with the dog and their foster home carers. A two week trial period is given. We want our dogs and their new families to be completely happy. Some dogs have special medical requirements. We’ve had dogs arrive off farms with untreated broken legs which require amputation, we’ve had an untreated ruptured eye that needed removing, entropion eyelids requiring surgery, lameness requiring x-rays, skin conditions, ear/eye infections, heart conditions, blind dogs, deaf dogs. If a dog has a good nature, we want to do our best ensure they get the chance they deserve and we will do whatever is possible to help them. Foster homes are crucial to our rescue. We have a small team of experienced foster homes - most of which are out of town. We are always looking for new foster homes with good dog experience, safe, secure fencing and someone home during parts of the day. All food and vet care is provided (also crate/blankets if required). We also help dogs in the community. All to often young puppies and dogs of all ages are posted on the facebook pet pages with not much thought put into where they will end up. We want to encourage the de-sexing message where-ever we can! Due to back-yard breeding and over-population, there are thousands of puppies and dogs all over NZ that will not get a chance for life because there are not enough good, lifelong, responsible homes available.....yet the breeding continues at a HUGE rate. Many of our pups and dogs come from farm properties. We’ve also helped a few pigs, sheep, goats and chickens find loving, save, forever homes that are able to provide them all the quality care they deserve for their natural lifespan. ⭐️ We have updated our wish list!

Items we would love: Adaptil calming products Rescue Remedy Snuffle feeding mats Good quality dry food (Adult and Puppy - medium/large breed) Kongs, toys, treats, chews Collars Worm/flea treatments
