I struggled to find anything NZ made. So much of our pet food comes from overseas, which for an agricultural nation like NZ makes no sense to me! The other thing that drives me is that there is just so much nonsense on the internet about pet food. It is so confusing for consumers and I wanted to create a brand that would cut through that noise and create products that are well formulated, backed by the latest nutrition science and that pet owners can trust. Today is World Environment Day 🌎

This year's theme is 'beating plastic pollution'. Unfortunately, the pet food industry creates an enormous amount of plastic waste.

Our packaging still needs to be made of plastic to ensure our food remains safe and nutritious. But we are currently moving all of our packaging into soft plastic recyclable material 🥰

✅ Our 2.5kg bags are already in soft plastic recyclable packaging
✅ We'll soon be releasing our trial bags and our Koi Carp treats in soft plastic recyclable bags as well
✅ When we've used up all our existing 9kg packaging (we do have a lot!) we'll be changing these to soft plastic recyclable material as well

We'd like to see the government do more to help small NZ businesses like ours make the transition into packaging that is recyclable AND make it easy for consumers to recycle soft plastics in their normal kerbside recycling.

🤞 Our home base of Nelson has recently been involved in some kerbside trials and we'd love to see this rolled out nationwide.

We often get asked about the fish oil in our Ocean Fish recipe 🐟

Here at Genius we believe that joint support is important at all life stages and so our Ocean Fish diet is packed with Salmon and enriched with fish oil to help maintain healthy joints at all ages.

👉 But unfortunately there’s no requirement for Adult or Senior dog foods to include DHA or EPA — only puppy food is required to have a minimal level of them.

💧 Omega 3 Fatty acids are natural anti-inflammatories that can help reduce joint pain. The types of Omega 3 that are most beneficial for joints are DHA and EPA. These are found in high levels in fatty fish, like Salmon, and can be concentrated into fish and other marine oils.

Due to the higher cost of including these ingredients many Adult and Senior dog foods do not contain any DHA and EPA.

To be clear - this is not at the level of a therapeutic diet such as Hills J/D, but at a good, everyday level to support growing pups, active adults and senior dogs without current signs of osteoarthritis.

As the cold weather closes in many dog owners are noticing their older pet’s showing the familiar signs of osteoarthritis - pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.

While we now have a great range of drugs and nutraceuticals to treat the pain associated with osteoarthritis the tricky part is that many dogs don’t show signs of pain until they’re really hurting.

That’s why joint health isn’t just something to “fix” when it goes wrong — it’s something to work on protecting throughout your dog’s life.

And one of the most powerful ways to do that? Nutrition.

1️⃣ FEED A DIET ENRICHED WITH O3

2️⃣ KEEP YOUR DOG AT AN IDEAL WEIGHT

Extra weight = extra pressure on joints. Over a lifetime this can compound and put your dog at higher risk of developing osteoarthritis. Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise is crucial for preventing or managing osteoarthritis in dogs. Our food is naturally lower in fat, making it easier to keep your dog trim - without sacrificing flavour or energy.Extra weight = extra pressure on joints.

3️⃣ MAINTAIN LEAN MUSCLE MASS

Muscles act as cushions around the joints, absorbing impact and reducing stress on the cartilage. They also help stabilize the joints, making them less prone to injury and pain. Protein is the primary building block for muscle tissue and so feeding a highly digestible diet, with an optimal range of amino acids, is essential. This is even more important as dog's age and become less active. Many brands use only cheaper meat meals or bump up their protein levels with large amounts of (even cheaper) legumes. We don’t.

🐶👩‍⚕️Today is World Veterinary Day and this year's theme is "Animal health takes a team". Nowhere is that more relevant than in the animal welfare space.

Early in my veterinary career I was fortunate to work as a veterinary representative on a Companion Animals NZ committee and I have seen first hand the positive impact this organisation is having on animal welfare.

Right now they are running a campaign calling for the government to place greater importance on the welfare of companion animals in Aotearoa.

They want:
👉 Better animal welfare regulations
👉 Rental housing protections for pet owners
👉 Emergency management plans that include provisions for pets
👉 Comprehensive microchipping requirements
👉 A NZ animal shelter database
👉 Free or low-cost spey/neuter programmes to help reduce the unwanted pet population
