π‘«π’Šπ’… 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒔𝒆?

Here’s part 3️⃣ of Nathan’s very early stages of groundwork with Koda. As seen, a brace in a horse can lead to explosive reactions πŸ’₯. Throughout our training, we aim to develop true softness by working through braces in the horse in order to develop unison between horse and human. The question and intention ought to always be the same, whether that be for moving the front end over, moving the hind end over, lateral flexion, vertical flexion, stopping, backing, or moving outβ€”and most of all, true collection. The question and intention should always be the same: π™™π™žπ™™ π™©π™π™š π™π™€π™§π™¨π™š 𝙩π™ͺ𝙧𝙣 π™‘π™€π™€π™¨π™š?

🩢🩢🩢Silva 🩢🩢🩢 and his first canter πŸ‡! Moving out and gaining confidence with every transition.

🩢Silva was started under saddle last month, and these are his very first baby steps 🐎

It might look a little uneventful β€” like not much is happening β€” but that’s exactly the point. It’s all about giving him a positive, relaxed introduction and letting him soak up this whole new world.

A sure sign Wilson had a big week β€” he’s definitely earned a well-deserved Easter weekend! 🐣

Happy Easter everyone! 🌸

Here’s a look at the process we use when introducing a young horse to the saddleβ€”breaking things down into small, understandable steps.

02/04/2026

Here’s part 2 of an early groundwork session with Koda.

A big focus here is getting him comfortable with ropes touching all parts of his body β€” especially those more sensitive areas. The goal is to help him feel, think, and respond… rather than feel and react with fear or explosion.

Realistically, situations happen:
β€’ Ponying and a rope slips under the tail
β€’ Roping and the line ends up somewhere unexpected
β€’ Wires, tape, or vines out on the trail

➑️As Buck Brannaman says, you really want to get a rope around your horse β€” or one day, someone else will… so you’d better have your horse prepared.

Taking the time early on to prepare them for these moments can make all the difference. It’s not always the easiest or most comfortable place to work, but it’s necessary if you want a horse with a solid foundation β€” one that stays thoughtful instead of reactive.

This is where safety, trust, and reliability are built. 🐴

2-year-old Amira is learning the difference between being desensitised and being directed.

Right now, we’re working with the tarp in two different ways:

βœ”οΈ First, as a desensitising tool β€” where the goal is for her to stand relaxed, not move her feet, and be completely okay with the tarp touching and moving around her body.

βœ”οΈ Then, as a communication tool β€” where that same tarp becomes a cue to move. In this case, we use it to ask her to step into a circle and to guide her in the direction we’re suggesting.

This can be a bit confusing at first β€” β€œDo I stand still, or do I move?” β€” but Amira is figuring it out pretty quickly, checking in and trying to understand what’s being asked of her.

La Kota Arrow

From thunder β›ˆοΈβš‘οΈand rumble… to soft and steady ➑️✨

This gelding started out feeling pretty worried about that rope β€” lots of movement and big reactions. When a horse is that reactive, it’s not about the rope itself β€” it’s about how they’re feeling underneath. Unsure, worried, and needing to move those feet to find some answers.

So we let him work through it.

No rush, no fight β€” just consistent feel and release, giving him the time to realise the pressure wasn’t there to trap him, but to guide him. This is a great exercise for getting horses used to things being around their legs and body. As he started to search for a better answer, you could see the change… the feet slowed, the body softened, and the mind came back.

Same rope. Same horse.
Different understanding πŸ’«
That’s the magic we love β€” helping them go from reactive to responsive, from chaos to connection.
