A lack of energy or unwillingness to engage in physical activity is often the initial indication that your pet may be experiencing discomfort. In younger canines, torn ligaments in the knees are commonly observed, which can be identified by a limp and a hesitation to stand.

For older dogs exhibiting lethargy, it is possible that they are dealing with arthritis, as stated by the American Kennel Club. Osteoarthritis typically affects the hips, knees, or elbows, and is caused by the gradual breakdown of the smooth cartilage coating the joints. Additionally, the formation of calcified areas on the joint surface, known as osteophytes, can occur. These rough patches disrupt the smooth gliding motion normally present in healthy joints. Consequently, when these joints move, the osteophytes rub or grate against the bone, resulting in considerable discomfort.
