The Life Cycle of a Dahlia

Dahlias begin underground, tucked away as tubers. We dig and divide them each winter, then carefully store them in wood chips to keep them dry and protected.

Come spring, between September and December, we pop them back into the soil. As the ground warms, those quiet tubers send up fresh green shoots.

By midsummer, the garden is full of strong stems, lush foliage, and buds that burst into the most vibrant blooms. Each flower shines for a moment, feeding bees and filling vases, before the plant begins to fade back into the earth.

Below ground, the tubers multiply, storing all the energy of the season, ready to begin the cycle again.

That’s the gift of dahlias: abundance, rest, and renewal, year after year.

What dahlia are you most excited about growing this year?

The very first tulips of the season are here, and I’ve been sneaking a few into the house before Tulip Club officially kicks off.

We’ve been harvesting them with the bulbs still attached and popping the whole stem bulb straight into a vase of fresh water. The difference has been amazing, the tulips keep drawing energy from the bulb, which means they last so much longer and keep their shape beautifully. Some of mine have been going strong for well over a week.

We’ve only got a handful of spaces left in this year’s Tulip Club, and if you’re already swooning over these early blooms… just wait until you experience the full season.

Three weeks of farm-fresh tulips, different mixes each time, straight from our Matangi garden to your vase.

Join us before we close numbers for the season.

The First Anemones Are Here 🌸

Our first anemones have started flowering this week.

The name comes from the Greek word anemos, meaning wind, because their petals move with the lightest breeze.

In Greek mythology, they were linked to Aphrodite and Adonis, symbolising love, loss, and anticipation.

In Victorian times, giving anemones meant “I’m waiting for you.”

They’re one of the earliest flowers to bloom here, bringing bright colour to the cooler days and a sign that spring isn’t far away.

From Our Hands to Yours

Back in March, the Kirikiriroa Earthworkers gathered in our gardens to make something special, a biodynamic compost, alive with beneficial microbes and made with care and intention.

This compost has been resting, transforming, and is now ready to become the foundation for every seedling we grow this season. It’s why our plants start strong, stay resilient, and thrive once they reach your garden.

It feels extra special this year knowing these seedlings will soon be part of your spring gardens, completing the full circle from our farm to your hands, to your plate.

August is one of our biggest seed-sowing months.

💬 Have you planned your spring garden yet? Which seedlings are you most excited to grow?

Seedling packs are now available to purchase, link in our bio or comment 🌱 and we’ll send you the link.

The first of our Tokyo Turnips are ready.

One of my favourite winter veggies, sweet, tender, and perfect straight out of the garden (yes, you can eat them raw!).

They’re freshly picked and heading into our farm fridge this week, perfect for roasting, adding to salads, or just snacking on whole.

Pop by and grab a bunch while they’re at their best.

Fun fact: Tokyo turnips aren’t like regular turnips, they’re a Japanese variety that stays sweet and mild, even raw. The greens are edible too and packed with vitamin C 🫜 🫜

What is Tulip Club?

Tulip Club is here and we’ve got 12 spots left 🌷

Never heard of Tulip Club before? Here’s everything you need to know:

What is it?
A 3-week spring flower subscription from our small organic farm in Matangi, Waikato. You’ll receive one fresh tulip bouquet per week, across 3 weeks, timed for when the tulips bloom (August–October).

How many tulips will I get?
Each bouquet has 10–15 tulips, so over 3 weeks you’ll enjoy 30–45 farm-fresh tulips.

What colours and varieties?
We’ve planted a mix of soft blush pinks, creamy whites, rich reds and double-petaled tulips like ‘Columbus’, ‘Foxtrot’, and ‘Antarctica’. Colour palettes shift each week with the bloom.

How are they wrapped?
Bouquets are hand-harvested, wrapped simply in kraft paper, and tied with twine, compostable, plastic-free, and ready for your vase.

Pick-up or delivery?
Collect from Tomtit Farm (Matangi) or Hamilton East, or add delivery to Tamahere or Cambridge for $25 (covers all 3 bouquets).

When does it run?
Tulip season is short! Bouquets are spaced across the flowering window — usually late August through early October. We’ll email you before each bouquet is ready.

Price:
$150 total for 3 weeks of tulips (+ $25 if you choose delivery).
These are the first flowers of spring — short season, limited blooms, and just 12 spots left.

✨ Treat yourself or someone you love.
