🎅🐾 Christmas can be a challenging time for our pets, as there's lots of temptations such as festive food and sparkly decorations, which can be risky for pets. 🐾🎄

To help keep your pets safe this Christmas, here are a couple of helpful tips:
• Keep festive food out of reach from pets, they’re best enjoyed by human family members!
• Secure your Christmas tree and discourage pets from claiming decorations as they can be hazardous if chewed or swallowed. Glass decorations may not be the best fit if you have playful pets in your home.

Our partners at Pet Refuge NZ need your help this festive season.

*Kodi is currently in Pet Refuge’s care, but when he first arrived at the shelter, thick discharge covered both of his eyes which meant he was severely uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, testing has revealed a severe eye condition, which requires complex surgery to save Kodi’s sight. Without it, his vision will continue to deteriorate, and he’s also at risk of developing painful ulcers which could lead to complete blindness.

A donation towards Kodi’s care will help to cover the cost of the surgery, ongoing treatment and monitoring to prevent infection.

Golden Rule #5 - Be patient and wait for the flea life cycle to break

If you’re facing a flea outbreak, you’ll need to be patient, as it can take several weeks to break the flea life cycle in your home. This is because fleas will still emerge from their protected pupal stage (the most difficult stage to kill).

However, there’s a few suggestions which may help including:
• Use a dual-action flea treatment like Advantage™, Advocate™ or Seresto™ which kills both adult fleas AND helps control environmental flea infestations by killing flea larvae in the pet's environment.
• Use a flea bomb/flea fogger targeting the areas where your pet spends the most time. Don’t forget to also treat your car if your pet spends time travelling with you. Remember to check product instructions regarding pet safety.
• Remove as many flea eggs as possible and kill flea larvae by washing bedding in 60˚C hot water. Don’t forget to wash your pet’s blankets, beds, throw rugs and pet carriers also.
• Vacuum regularly to remove up to 90% of flea eggs.
• Keep your garden tidy to discourage rodents and eliminate flea breeding spots where your pets play and rest.

Golden Rule #4 Think about where your pet may have picked up new fleas

Advantage™, Advocate™ and Seresto™ all harness the same active ingredient to kill fleas providing effective and trusted flea control.

However, it is still possible to see occasional fleas on your treated pet, which is
often a sign that your pet is still picking up fleas from their environment.

It can be difficult to know where pets have picked up new fleas from as it's not always very obvious! It could be from a stray pet wandering through your garden or pets who have visited your home.

But don't fret! These fleas won't survive long after jumping onto your treated pet! Fleas must jump onto your treated pet for the treatments to effectively kill them.

If you’re using one of the products listed above, fleas are killed through contact; meaning fleas don’t need to bite your pet to die, which means less stress and discomfort for your pet by minimizing painful, itchy, flea bites.

Here’s the third golden rule to help fight fleas on your pets.

Golden Rule #3 Check you’re using the product correctly
When purchasing a trusted flea treatment for your pet, its best to discuss the different options with your vet clinic. They’ll also weigh your pet to ensure your pet is receiving the correct dose.
After purchase, it is suggested to read all of the instructions carefully to ensure the flea treatment is applied correctly and also so you know when to apply the next flea treatment.
