Recently, our Wellington Inspectorate team attended a call about a tethered dog. When they attended, they found Shy tied up due to a lack of fencing at her family's property; there were signs that she was being tethered for prolonged periods, and wasn't getting enough exercise.

Shy’s owners had taken her on about 6 weeks prior after a friend told them she was too ‘shy and timid’ to be a hunting dog. Having recently immigrated to New Zealand, the family were unaware of our animal welfare laws and regulations – but once our Inspectors educated them on the subject, they realised they couldn't provide the standard of care Shy needed.

Our Inspectors offered to take Shy into SPCA's care, which her owners agreed to. As her namesake suggested, Shy was initially very timid and nervous, but she's since come out of her shell!

“We go for walks every day and she absolutely loves sniffing; she has a great nose," her foster parents tell us. "She met a dog today and they played so well. She does great in the car and has even started jumping in on her own!" As the second and third photos show, she's clearly loving life 🥰

Our Inspectors work hard every day to create better lives for New Zealand's animals. They know that not every case of neglect comes from a malicious place; sometimes, sharing knowledge and education is the best way to make positive change. We're grateful to Shy's previous owners for realising she needed more than they could give, and we're excited for her future!

Did you see our now-famous Shorna the lamb feature on Seven Sharp on Friday night? 🐑🤩

Shorna had a close shave with a train, and wound up in the care of our Masterton Centre. While recovering, she's been hanging out with another lamb, Aggie - who you may have spotted showing off her jumping moves on our social media last week! ❤️

Tommy was an unsocial stray when we first met him - and what a long way he's come, as the star of ! 🥰

"He loves to snuggle, run around, and play in his little cat tunnel - and pulling his toy box over, and scattering his excessive amount of toys all over the room!" says adopter Kirsty.

"He loves playing parkour off of all of my furniture and his cat tree. He is still a bit timid initially when it comes to introducing new people or new rooms of the house, but settles quickly and has adapted really well." 💙

Our Masterton-based Inspectors recently assisted a local family affected by recent severe weather events in the Wairarapa region.

The Wairarapa has experienced a relentless series of storms and heavy rainfall events throughout 2026, including significant weather in February, April, and an intense double round of heavy rain in early July. These events resulted in rapid river flooding, widespread farm slips, localised evacuations, and prolonged isolation for a number of coastal and rural communities from Pirinoa to Cape Palliser. While recovery and road rebuilding work continues in some areas, the impact of the damage is still being felt by local families.

The Rural Support Trust - Wairarapa (RST), which has been assisting a family in Pirinoa, reached out to SPCA for support. Due to weight restrictions on a damaged road and a broken trailer, the family was facing difficulties transporting feed for their horses and cattle. Thanks to an existing relationship with the RST through the local Animal Welfare Emergency Management (AWEM) welfare committee and routine Inspectorate work, communication was quick and seamless.

Working alongside the generous team at Scott's Ag Contracting Ltd, we were able to rapidly secure a large round bale of hay, load it onto an SPCA trailer, and deliver it directly to the appreciative family. We have also offered to help transport additional hay supplies from another location until the family's trailer can be repaired.

This was a great example of local organisations, businesses, and community groups working together to support animals and people during challenging times. To everyone involved – tēnā rā koe i ō mahi!

Two peas in a pod 🫛

Dotty and Stripey are the adorable stars of ❤️ These siblings were adopted from our Wellington Centre, and have been loving life with their new family.

"They're settling in very well and getting used to their new space," they tell us. "They love exploring all the different areas of the house and playing with all their toys.

"Our daughter loves playing with them. They are very happy, playful, cuddly little kitties and a lovely addition to our whānau!"

We're thrilled these cuties found the perfect home together 🙏
