Belmont Farm - Grazing Facility and Riding School We are a friendly, family run riding school in North Auckland. We celebrate horses through education!

One of the biggest mistakes buyers make?

They meet a horse in one management system… and expect it to behave exactly the same in another.

A horse living in a large paddock with friends, worked consistently 5 days a week by a confident rider may genuinely be quiet, relaxed and rideable.

Move that same horse to:
• more stabling
• less turnout
• inconsistent work
• a nervous rider
• a completely different routine
…and you may meet a very different horse.

Not because anyone lied.
Not because the horse is “bad.”
And not because the seller hid something.

Management matters. Workload matters. Rider confidence matters.

And confidence works both ways.

Georgie was incredibly confident on her other horse.

She initially handled Lightning’s young horse antics without issue.

And Lightning? He was incredibly confident with his previous owner and could tolerate the occasional rider mistake. To a point.

But after a few too many young horse moments from Lightning… both horse and rider confidence cups started draining.

Suddenly, the horse trusted the rider less.
The rider trusted the horse less.
And everything felt harder.
Thankfully, we had Amelia step in to help...

That’s the reality people don’t talk about enough — a horse and rider can both be wonderful individually and still need support to become great together.

The goal isn’t just buying a good horse. But buying the right horse that will still be the right horse in six months.

It’s creating the right environment and success long term — and protecting both confidence cups once the horse comes home.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Belmont Mums making horses happen for their kids - it’s no easy hobby for your kid to be addicted to (sorry about that!) and I am in awe of all of you 🌼

Running a riding school can be bloody challenging and lonely at times but not when you have a support system/team mates/friends like these two!
So great to catch up with Alice from Ti Point Ponies and Jen from Belmont Farm - Grazing Facility and Riding School - it only took a year of trying, thank goodness for a rained off day of lessons 🤣🤣

Featuring the universal coaches uniform - not planned - all in our hoodies, fresh faced, windswept and rained on and messy buns probably full of hay!!!!

Haha!

Thinking of buying a horse?
Amazing. Love that for you.
Just a tiny heads-up first…

Buying a horse is a bit like:

Getting a second full-time job

Adopting a very large toddler

Entering a long-term relationship with mud

And voluntarily donating all spare income to the universe

You will tell yourself things like:

“I’ll just pop to the yard for half an hour.”

This is a lie.

You will also say:

“I won’t need much stuff.”

Another lie.
Your horse will need rugs for:

Rain

No rain

Cold

Mild cold

Wind

Emotional reasons

You will become:

Weirdly knowledgeable about poo 💩

Able to smell rain before the Met Office

Comfortable standing in a field questioning your life choices at 6am

Deeply attached to an animal that regularly tries to kill itself with a bucket

Holidays will now mean:

Finding cover

Feeling guilty

Checking the yard WhatsApp

Wondering if they miss you (they don’t)

BUT…
Despite the mud.
Despite the cost.
Despite the emotional rollercoaster and the “why am I like this” moments…

There will be that look.
That soft nose.
That quiet moment where they choose you.

And suddenly you’ll understand why horse people are the way they are.

So yes.
Buy the horse.

Just know…
You’re not buying a pet.

You’re buying a lifestyle, a personality trait, and a very muddy soul connection 😂🐴💛

CARING STARTS BEFORE CELEBRATION 💚

Guy Fawkes is today. A great time to show the care and preparation that make Pony Club riders and families who they are.

Horses rely on us to help them feel safe and calm when the world gets noisy.

With a little planning, you can make tonight peaceful for everyone: two-legged and four.

Five simple ways to prepare:
🔹 Choose a calm, secure paddock
🔹 Check fences and remove hazards
🔹 Keep herd mates together for comfort
🔹 Leave lights or music on to soften sudden noise
🔹 Check horses and paddocks early tomorrow

Let’s celebrate safely, with empathy and care, because that’s what Pony Club values are all about.

There are some truly magical things I have witnessed among our students, who have chosen this as their obsession.

7 words keep coming up in my journal; 7 things that I am noticing improve and adjust in our students from spending time with horses and having regular coaching.

Since quitting corporate and coaching within the business full time, I have noticed so many things that I woudln’t have understood or seen unless I was teaching regularly. It’s been eye-opening spending so much time with the horses and students, and as a prolific observer and ‘data-collector.....

Here it is..., my BRAIN ARTICLE. Many of you have picked up on my recent obsession with horse brains.

For many students that come to Belmont, horses give them a platform to practice MINDFULNESS. What’s ultimately beautiful (and unique) about our collective pastime is our magnificent team mate. To bring our focus to something primal and ‘of nature’ and ‘in nature’ really resonates with so many humans today.

Surely when horses benefit our own state of mind so much, we have a duty to at least have a basic understanding of what goes on between their ears?

Happy reading,
Jen xx
