If you're a horse owner, it's important that you're aware of the signs of strangles disease, a bacterial infection that causes fever and breathing issues. You can find out more on our website: www.nzva.org.nz/strangles

Please contact your veterinarian about any suspected cases to get further advice. You can take the following steps to reduce the risk of an outbreak:

▪ Vaccination: This can reduce the severity and spread of disease. Consult your veterinarian for advice, as boosters are required.
▪ Good hygiene: Regularly disinfect equipment and practise thorough handwashing after handling horses.
▪ Vigilance: Monitor for signs of illness and contact your vet promptly if you suspect strangles.

📣 Targeted dog desexing programme update! 📣 Earlier this year, SPCA received close to $500,000 from the Lottery Minister’s Discretionary Fund, to deliver a targeted 12-month dog desexing programme across Auckland and Northland.

This programme aims to support the desexing of up to 3,000 dogs in these communities where the numbers of stray and roaming dogs have been at unprecedented levels.

The work is being completed through a combination of SPCA's existing community desexing initiatives, and targeted voucher distribution made available through this Government funding. SPCA is working alongside a growing network of partners to deliver this work, including veterinary clinics and rescue groups, with additional organisations continuing to come on board 🩵

“This programme is about reaching the dogs and communities that need support the most,” says SPCA Chief Scientific Officer Dr Arnja Dale. "By getting the vet clinics to issue vouchers, it means community members are building relationships with their local vets too."

Since the programme began, 219 dogs have already been desexed, preventing an estimated 548 unwanted puppies from being born 🙏

Residents in Auckland and Northland are encouraged to check in with their local Centre or participating partner organisation to see if they are eligible for desexing support – read more and find details on our site: https://www.spca.nz/news-and-events/news-article/dog-desexing-making-an-impact

***UPDATE***
These dogs have now been picked up, are safe and are being cared for as per shared comment below ❤️
“They have been picked up. They are absolutely beautiful. Off to the vets Monday to get checked over. They are a bit timid but both love affection”.

These two dogs have turned up at a property that borders Aupouri Foresty in Waipapakauri 2 days ago. They are very thin and malnourished and although they are wary, they appear friendly. Black is a male and tan is female. Does anyone recognise them? If you have any information, please phone TopVets Kaitaia 094082838
