There are many options for treatment of arthritis, but unfortunately no cure.

🐾Pain relief
-Usually multimodal (a combination of different pain-relief methods, to target pain at multiple points in the pain pathway).
-Non steroidals are the usual starting point, as they target pain as well as inflammation.
-Usually, more medications such as gabapentin and symmetryl are added in as the condition progresses.

🐾Physiotherapy
-Massage, stretching and laser therapy help with pain relief.
-Improvement of mobility and flexibility.
-Increase balance and coordination.
-Gentle exercise to help with weight loss if its needed.

🐾Acupuncture
-Most animals tolerate acupuncture really well, and the release of endorphins helps provide natural pain relief.
-Help with mobility by reducing pain and inflammation.

🐾Complementary therapies
-Hydrotherapy
-Laser
-Magnetic field therapy
-Chiropractor

🐾Supplements
-Use reputable brands who can provide proven results, batch numbers and manufacturing information.
-Aimed usually at the reduction of pain and inflammation.
-Dogs cannot metabolise flaxseed, linseed or canola oil sufficiently, so avoid products with these ingredients.
-Prescription joint diets are researched and often more economical to feed than a diet + a separate supplement.

There is much you can do to improve and maintain your pets quality of life after a arthritis diagnosis.

🐾Brain stimulation
Thinking games such as hide and seek, puzzles, teaching tricks, frozen treats, paddling pools, snuffle mats, new toys, new hiding places.

🐾At home nursing
Keep your house warm and comfortable. Provide clothing if needed on cold days.
Keep your pet clean and dry. Brush them regularly and help maintain their coat.
Block off areas like slippy floors, stairs etc to prevent accidents.
A healthy weight should be maintained, and high quality food fed to them.
Use of assistive devices such as harnesses, ramps, raised bowls etc implemented into the home.

🐾Exercise
Think low impact, on a steady surface. Avoiding high impact play such as group play and ball throwing. No twisting and turning suddenly.
Regular short sessions - "move it or lose it".
Swimming is great, low impact exercise for arthritic animals - yes, cats can do it too!

From our beginnings in Christchurch to opening in Kaiapoi - we have reached 40 years of Petmed. 🎈

We are so proud of this milestone and wish to take a moment to thank EVERYONE who has ever supported us, cheered for us and trusted us with your beloved pets. 🥰

Also, to the people of Petmed (past and present) - you are all the heart and soul of the clinic, thank you for your endless kindness, empathy, laughs and hard work that has made Petmed what it is. 🦸‍♂️

We hope to be around for another 40 years and the rest. 💙

We will be posting memories from over the years throughout this month and would love to see any you have to share with us as well. 😍

Diagnosing arthritis is more than just imaging the sore area, we need to check the health of the whole animal.

🐾Blood testing: Routinely done to check the overall health of your pet before starting them on anti-inflammatories. This also gives us a baseline to refer back to during treatment. Sometimes secondary conditions such as kidney or liver disease change the medications we use on your pets.

🐾Urine testing: Helpful in diagnosing or picking up acute or chronic illness.

🐾Radiographs (x-rays): Osteophyte formation on a radiograph is a clear indicator of arthritic change. X-rays also rule out fractures, dislocations, tumors, infections etc.

🐾CT scan: Like a 3D x-ray, very useful for joints like elbows. These need a specialist referral.

🐾Joint tap: Sampling joint fluid if other types of arthritis such as septic as suspected.
