Sharing an Interesting story - A Loggerhead Sea Turtle!
This wee girl was brought into the Centre last week by a compassionate French tourist.
She had been washed ashore on a local beach and was in very poor condition (Wound on her flipper, was hypothermic, not eating and was very sad, lethargic and slow). Unfortunately she was beyond saving and passed away not long after being admitted.
If you discover a sea turtle washed ashore, its important to contact the Department of Conservation ASAP to seek the best advice. Turtles found on Southland beaches are typically severely cold-shocked, dehydrated, or suffering from plastic ingestion. Beaching themselves is usually a last-ditch effort to prevent drowning and returning the turtle to the water can be fatal.
