Wharerata Road update – Wednesday 5 August, 7:30 am ❄️

We’ve just come over Wharerata Road this morning.

There’s plenty of snow settled on the road, along with a fair amount of ice and slush. Traffic is moving slowly but freely, and it’s great to see everyone driving to the conditions.

If you’re travelling over the hill this morning, allow a little extra time, take it easy, and stay safe.

A new chapter for VetEast.

We’re delighted to announce that, effective 1 August, Scott Hawkins, Robyn Haasbroek and Hoffman Haasbroek have officially become shareholders in VetEast.

Scott, Robyn and Hoffman have each made an outstanding contribution to our practice and are recognised for their professionalism, work ethic and dedication to their clients, colleagues and our business.

Above all, they are people of great character who genuinely care about their clients, their patients, our team and the future of veterinary services in our region.

This is an exciting milestone for VetEast. Meet the “A” Team… plus Tatiana! 🐾💚

The friendly faces behind the front desk and around the clinic are a huge part of what makes VetEast special.

🐶 Aimee joined us in October 2025 and has become a familiar face for many of our clients. Growing up on a sheep and beef farm in Wairoa, she has always had a love for animals, especially dogs. Whether you’re visiting the clinic or calling us on the phone, chances are Aimee will be there with a smile and ready to help.

🐑 Anna joined the team in June this year and has hit the ground running. She works across our production animal retail team, coordinates farm bookings and helps out on reception. Her positive attitude and friendly nature have made her a fantastic addition to the VetEast family.

🐱 Tatiana is the newest member of our veterinary nursing team, joining us all the way from Argentina. She’s already become a valued part of the clinic, with a keen interest in anaesthesia and a particular soft spot for cats. We’re thrilled to have her on board as she continues to build her skills and enjoy life in New Zealand.

If you see these three around the clinic, be sure to say hello! We’re incredibly lucky to have such a caring, hardworking team looking after our clients and their animals. 💚

𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬

You may have heard there is currently a strangles outbreak in the Waikato.

The latest NZVA Equine Veterinarians update from 6 July confirms that affected properties have increased over the past week, with the outbreak mainly involving training and pre-training properties, and some stud farms. At this stage it is still considered isolated to the Waikato region, with one well-contained Auckland property directly linked to the Waikato outbreak.

There are currently 𝐧𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐯𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 through the main NZ suppliers, although more vaccine is expected later this month. We’ll keep clients updated as that changes.

For now, the key message is good biosecurity and early monitoring.

Please be extra cautious if your horse has recently travelled, is due to travel, or has had contact with horses from the Waikato or racing/training environments.

Watch for:
• fever
• nasal discharge
• coughing
• swollen glands under the jaw
• horses going off feed or seeming dull

If you are worried, please phone us before bringing your horse to the clinic so we can give the right advice and reduce the risk of spread.

If you need to check temperatures before travelling or floating horses, get in touch with the clinic and we can help talk you through the best approach.

Huge thank you to everyone who came along to our talk last night on the findings from our Copper and BVD survey which we conducted across 50 farms, 500 blood samples and covering the length and breadth of the East Coast.

We were genuinely humbled by the turnout, and privileged to have the chance to speak with so many farmers about practical, proactive animal health advice. It was great to see such strong interest in two issues that can quietly have a big impact on beef cow performance across the East Coast.

A big thanks also to everyone who asked questions and supported the project.

We are putting together a summary of the key findings, including what we found around BVD exposure and copper deficiency across the farms involved in the survey.
