OTAGO KENNEL ASSOCIATION (Inc)

The Beginning:

On the 12 March 1952 the first meeting of the Otago Kennel Association took place. This came about by the amalgamation of the Otago Kennel Club and the Dunedin Fanciers Club (Inc). The Otago Kennel Association has had a chequered career over the years, Originally we were part of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Association when they held their fir

st Annual Show on the 18th November 1877 and 14 classes of dogs were scheduled. Later (Date unknown to writer) the name became the Dunedin Fanciers Club Inc., which catered for Poultry, Pigeons, Canaries, Budgerigars, Foreign Birds, Dogs and Children's Classes, these Shows ran in conjunction with the A & P Show. In 1935 there was a split with a group breaking away and forming the Otago Kennel Club (Inc), this Club was incorporated on the 24th June 1935. Due to a downturn of members participating in Club activities and the soaring cost of maintaining our Club Rooms the building in Melbourne Street was disposed of at the end of 2003 to the Otago Wood Turners Guild.

The Otago Kennel Association would like to acknowledge the passing of our dear friend Bella Williams Life Member Past President and present committee member. Bella along with her Sister Melba would produce the magnificent OKA Raffle. They put it together over the Year 80 and more prizes.It was an important feature of our Ch Show in March.Most of the prizes they donated all for the OKA.Bella always at the raffle table selling the tickets. Her love of Rough Collies got her involved with dog shows along with her late brother Robert . Rangi Ch Gaybridge Just Love Me also won Rough Collie of the year followed by Jake Ch Rangi s Love of Gaybridge then Jack Ch Gaybridge Hit the Jackpot and Lance Ch Velden Sun Striker(pictured) the Collies were show dogs and most importantly family and lately Bentley her much loved companion.The little sheltie was always by her side keeping an eye on her never far from her side.Bella you will be sorely missed from all here at the OKA and many other dog people here and around NZ .You will not be forgotten.

Thankyou all who came to our OKA Museum Trust Forrester Park shows this last weekend .When i have the In Show results will put them up.Many thanks to our secretary Sylvia we know how hard it was for you after your family bereavement we send you our condolences and thankyou . Keith Brown who managed our show and made sure we had judges when we lost 2 of them and for running a,successful weekend ,thankyou Stephen Meredith for stepping in at late notice The judges Lyndal and Jim Black and Caroline Matherson you were awesome also our Stewards Kim who did a great job after also coping with a personal tragedy and Jan ,Alex and Rachel you were great as you always are we thank you.Our OKA raffle was the best thankyou Melba and Bella alot of hard work goes into it over the year we ran out of books so it proved to be more successful than we had planned and thankyou Angela for doing the many jobs you did and Kaiser ,Jayden and Tom for the great clean up job at the end of the show and of course the exhibitors hope you all had a safe trip home and we will see you back next year for our 75th
