CRD is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned kittens and cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our dedicated team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year. We promote desexing of companion and stray cats, and aim to reduce the number of stray and unwanted cats in Dunedin. Our long-term aim is to have our

own shelter but in the meantime, all our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers until they are ready for their forever homes. Our main focus is kittens but we try to help with rehoming adult cats whenever space and resources allow.

This very handsome fellow was adopted from us at the end of January. Initially Stanley was feisty and not that interested in being friends with his new family. But they kept him indoors and were patient with him and he slowly started to thaw.

Then, about three weeks ago, he accidentally escaped the house and since then he has turned into the sweetest, snuggly boy. We can only assume he got a fright and realised which side his bread is buttered on!

Transformation Tuesday is here and we have a story to share with you about Walter’s journey from hardship to living life like a king.

He came to us in an extremely poor state, dirty, with a huge abscess on his face (probably from fighting over girls).

But look at him now! He’s fully healed, clean and loving life! His trouble puffs have been removed so now he’s happy to curl up with his feline buddies and has left his street brawling days behind him.

Human interaction, however, remains low on his list of favourite activities. The only hands Walter truly appreciates are those carrying food bowls or dispensing treats. Those hands are tolerated. Briefly. Just don't get carried away and mistake tolerance for friendship. If you overstep his carefully guarded personal space, Walter will swiftly remind you that consent is important—with a slap powerful enough to reset your life choices. He's not feral anymore; he's simply operating as an independent contractor

Can anyone guess why he is named Walter?

We have just received this lovely update from Nicky, who adopted Ketu (tabby) from us last Monday. Here he is with his new friend Vijia. It didn't take them long to become fast friends and Vijia is so much happier and less anxious now that he has a cat buddy to hang out with.

On a cold wet day, we have a heartwarming story for you.

Earlier in the week, this little wild-born kitten found her way to the back yard of New World Mosgiel in search of food. Luckily, she was spotted and a staff member quickly contacted us asking if we could help her. We dropped off a trap, and she was caught almost immediately.

The team at New World have named her Molly. Thanks to them, she is now safe and is no longer struggling on her own to survive on the streets. She will also not go on to have litters of kittens, while still a kitten herself.

We would also like to say a massive thank you to the owners of New World Mosgiel who have given us a generous donation which will go towards Molly’s care while she is with us.

As you can see in the picture, Molly looks rather unimpressed with her new situation, but it won't be long before she realises just how great her new life is going to be!

This shy wee girl has only been in her foster home for a week, but already she is making slow but steady progress in this scary new world she finds herself in.

Her fosterer says that her favourite place is underneath a bed, where she spends 85% of her time. Late at night she comes out to explore the house, and occasionally pushes items off higher surfaces 🤣

It’s National Volunteer Week!

We are so grateful to our amazing volunteers, without whom it wouldn’t be possible to run Cat Rescue Dunedin.

We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who volunteers in our charity shop, intake centre, desexing clinic, our fosterers, trappers, adoption co-ordinator, finance, management and admin volunteers, our handy person who helps with repairs, knitters and crafters and everyone who helps with our fundraising stalls, including the other fundraising organisers who manage our raffles, bingo and quiz nights.

We are so very appreciative of you all. Thank you for giving us your time and energy to help the cats of Dunedin.

Thank you to everyone who came along today and adopted from us. We still have more kittens in the pipeline who will be available for adoption in the coming weeks.

Also, a big thank you to Beachlands Speedway for letting us use their clubroooms.
