CRD is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned kittens and cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our amazing team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year. We promote desexing of companion and stray cats, and aim to reduce the number of stray and unwanted cats in Dunedin. Our long-term aim is to have our ow

n shelter but in the meantime, all our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers until they are ready for their forever homes.

Asha B and her two sisters were wild born and rescued off a farm. Asha B is still rather growly and snarly so has gone off without her sisters to one of our lovely fosters who will soon convince her that humans are actually quite good things, and handy to have around.

Her two sisters are friendly and would love some names to go along with their new, vastly improved lives.

If you would like to sponsor (and name) one in return for a $50 donation towards their care, be first to comment 'sponsor' on their picture.

PLEASE NOTE: Sponsorship is a tax-deductible donation of $50 to CRD towards our costs. Sponsorship entails naming the selected kitten (or cat) and doesn't ensure a preferential adoption position or serve as an adoption deposit.

Ziggy, the phantom menace, likes to think he is still top cat, but his lack of teeth tells us otherwise. His mind and soul are willing but his body? Not so much. His intent is 100%, but the damage is 20%, and that's only because he has murder mittens.

Ziggy is an older guy just looking for a quiet life in his retirement. We can say with confidence that anything flying would be pretty safe, but he could give a slow bunny a run for its money.

He does have scarring to his right cornea, but this is an old injury.

Ziggy would make a great outdoor cat that would possibly enjoy the warmth of a fire in time. He has come to us as his caretaker is moving overseas. Could you be the person to give Ziggy a quiet retirement home where he could live out his remaining years? He may even decide that he likes you 😊 Please email [email protected] if you would like Ziggy in your life.

Who remembers Lyra (now Leia), the wee girl who had to have her tail amputated?

Here she is enjoying her new home. Her new parents sent us this update:

Morning! We adopted Lyra (now she named Leia actually 😸) last Saturday and just wanted to give you a little update. She’s completely settled in now and seems to think she owns the house! She turned into a lap cat within just three days, which is amazing. She’s such a sweetheart and we’re absolutely loving having her around.

We think her cat tree is very flash! It's lovely to see her so settled in her new home.

Did anyone guess correctly?

Our total number of adoptions between 31 July 2025 - 31 July 2026 was 477.

The three most common colours were:
Tabby (240)
Black (97)
Black and White (62)

Followed by:
Grey/Silver (34),
Tortie/Calico (26)
Ginger (17)
Other (1)

We had 30 long haired cats, 13 medium haired and the rest were shorthaired.

Thank you for playing along! And thank you to everyone for continuing to support the work we do. We couldn't do this without you :-)

Who would like to play a game on this cold, horrible wet day?

First, how many cats and kittens do you think were adopted in the 12 months between 31 July 2025 and 31 July 2026?

What were the three most common colours that came through our doors?

How many were long-haired?

How many were ginger?

Drop your guesses in the comments below and we'll post the answers at 8pm :-)

UPDATE - his owner has been in touch.

This friendly boy was found in Surrey St. He has been hanging around a house for over a week and none of the neighbours recognise him.

No microchip, not desexed :-(

If he is yours, or you know who he belongs to, please get in touch. Proof of ownership will be required.

This is Lottie, who was adopted from us recently. Her new human describes her as beautiful and very much the boss around their house.

We definitely agree with both statements. Lottie is gorgeous and in the picture, she looks as though she would very much like to speak to the manager :-)

Walter and Scarlett love their catnip kicker! They had a wonderful time rolling around in the sun and taking turns chewing on it and rubbing it all over their faces.

Then Walter decided it was time for a nap, and that the kicker made a perfect pillow. Sorry Scarlett - the game is over for today!
