CRD is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned kittens and cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our dedicated team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year. We promote desexing of companion and stray cats, and aim to reduce the number of stray and unwanted cats in Dunedin. Our long-term aim is to have our

own shelter but in the meantime, all our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers until they are ready for their forever homes. Our main focus is kittens but we try to help with rehoming adult cats whenever space and resources allow.

🐾 Please help us find homes for some of our long-termers! 🐾

Some of our most charming, quirky, and overlooked cats are still waiting for their chance — and with a little patience, they’ll shine bright in the right home.

✨ Storm & Daisy – Stunning, shy duo seeking a calm home and an experienced human. Give them time and they’ll reward you with affection and plenty of slapstick entertainment.

✨ Panda & Jaguar – Panda’s a shy leg-warmer, Jaguar’s a confident cuddlebug, and together they’re playful, funny, and perfect for a quiet, patient home.

✨ Monty & Freya – Monty is a chatty cuddle machine with a mighty purr. Freya, his brave one-eyed sister, is gentle and sweet — especially with other cats nearby.

✨ Daisy & Trixie – The “Princesses of Mischief”! Daisy is curious and investigative, Trixie is a treat-loving bird-watcher, and together they offer endless entertainment.

✨ Martin – A beautiful but timid boy who needs a soft, patient home where he can finally bloom.

✨ Clover – A smooch-obsessed eight-year-old sweetheart aiming for the world record in face nudges and tiny kisses.

✨ Spice – Gentle, observant, and gaining confidence every day. Loves other cats, loves treats, loves kindness. A perfect companion for a calm home.

✨ Possum – Barn Cat Only. Possum is not suitable as a family pet. She’s wary of people and may attack unpredictably, but she’s extremely food-motivated and perfect for mouse control.

If you’ve got patience, kindness, or a cosy barn to share, one of these beautiful cats may be your perfect match. Please visit our website to submit an application and their foster will contact you (www.catrescuedunedin.org.nz/adopt)

These four week old babies are all looking for names! The first three wee ones were found by a kind man in his hen house, and brought to us; the next four were born into our care (and their mum has taken on the role of foster mum to the hen house kittens).

If you would like to name one in exchange for a $50 donation, be the first to comment sponsor on their picture.

As they are only four weeks old they are not available for adoption yet (but we will have kittens in the next few weeks).

PLEASE NOTE: Sponsorship is a tax-deductible donation of $50 to CRD towards our costs. Sponsorship entails naming the selected kitten (or cat) and doesn't ensure a preferential adoption position or serve as an adoption deposit.

We are so happy to let everyone know that we were successful in trapping the mumma cat of these kittens today.

She was very stressed to begin with, and we weren't certain that she would take them back. But after giving her some time in a quiet environment, she is now happily feeding and cleaning her babies

It's such a relief to have them reunited!

These wee babies were all born to wild mammas and are now with us in the care of one of our experienced vet nurses, who is hand feeding them.

The first girl in the blue blanket is only one week old, and the sibling pair are two weeks.

Today we had a lovely kind man call us for assistance. While moving machinery at work he found these five wee souls. Our trapper went to assess the situation and spent some time trying to trap mum cat. Sadly due to heavy machinery noise and activity she was scared away.

With the weather deteriorating and concerns the kittens hadn’t had a feed in many hours the decision was made to take the kittens into care where they will be hand fed. We hope that mum cat will be trapped over night and she can be reunited with her kittens tomorrow.

In the meantime these wee ones will be kept safe, warm, dry and fed.

Thank you to the man who cared about the welfare of these kittens and reached out to us for help.

Meet this sweet little old lady!
Clover is an absolute sweetheart with a calm gentle nature. She may be a little shy at first, but once she warms up, she’s full of affection and loves giving face snuggles and little licks. Clover is happy to share her space with other cats, preferring to relax in cozy spots or high perches where she can quietly observe. She enjoys gentle pats and regular brushing, and would thrive in a peaceful, loving home where she can continue to feel safe and adored.

Who remembers this handsome ginger fellow that we featured about 10 days ago, looking to see if we could find his people?

Turns out his name is Bert, and he had been lost for two years! We snapped a pic of their reunion at our intake centre, and Ray also very kindly sent us these photos that he took of Bert, and his brother Ernie, as Bert settled in back home as though he'd never been away.

Both Bert and Ernie are microchipped but their chips hadn't been registered on the NZ Companion Animal register. We have assisted Ray in registering them both so should Bert or Ernie decide to go on another solo adventure they can be quickly identified and returned home.

We love a happy ending and are so pleased we could help in reuniting Ray, Ernie and Burt but this is a reminder to please check that your pet's microchips are registered on the NZCAR. You can do this by going to their website - https://www.animalregister.co.nz/ and entering the microchip number into the checker field (see the last pic on this post for a screenshot).

Having your pet microchipped and registered on NZCAR gives you the best chance of being reunited should your pet be lost, or go missing.

This cat has been hanging around a property in Springhill Road for a while now. Approximately two years old (we've been told female). Not terribly friendly but loves food.

If this is your cat, or you know who it belongs to, please get in touch (proof of ownership required).

Our friends at MasterPet Care have just donated this large pallet of Vitapet clay cat litter.

As we enter into the busiest part of our year, contributions like these make a significant difference to our daily operations, ensuring we can continue our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome cats in need. The ongoing support from compassionate organisations like Masterpet allows us to focus more resources on the welfare and health of our animals, so thank you.
