CRD is a registered charity dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned kittens and cats living on the streets of Dunedin. Along with our dedicated team of volunteers we rescue, rehabilitate, desex and rehome hundreds of cats and kittens each year. We promote desexing of companion and stray cats, and aim to reduce the number of stray and unwanted cats in Dunedin. Our long-term aim is to have our

own shelter but in the meantime, all our rescues are fostered in private homes by volunteers until they are ready for their forever homes. Our main focus is kittens but we try to help with rehoming adult cats whenever space and resources allow.

Our staff and volunteers here at CRD really do go above and beyond. This is the story of Scharf, Mad Max, Mystery and their mum.

A caring woman noticed them in her garden and contacted us for help. She managed to catch Scharf, who came to us first, and then our trapper caught Mystery and mamma cat.

Mad Max wasn't going down without a fight however. He hid in a concrete block wall and the homeowner couldn't get him out. Our wonderful vet nurse Dannii put on her leather gloves and managed to wrangle him out of the wall. He looks SO impressed 😆

To call them feisty is an understatement lol. However, we are sure that with enough love and attention in one of our foster homes they will realise that a much better life awaits them.

We've got this lovely update on Bitey McPhee - who is no longer bitey :-) - from his fosterer, Rebecca:

Bitey has graduated to living in the cattery with 8 other kittens. He has 3 wee ones the same weight as him, who he is sleeping with at night. I am still providing heat packs in case they don't snuggle up, to make sure I keep him warm. It's good to see him socializing and having friends, as all good kittens should have. He is getting braver and starting to explore. He just needs a bit more time to put weight on (he's up to 512 grams), and he will have energy to play. At the moment he just takes everything in quietly. He is meowing for cuddles and enjoys watching TV from my arms. He's trying to get used to the wee dog and my own adult cats.

I feel like he has improved so much - brave wee man 🥰

PLEASE NOTE: Bitey is not available for adoption (before you all flood our messages asking about this gorgeous floof). He is going to be adopted by the staff member at Animates who he was first handed in to.

Scharf's siblings came to us today, and they wish to lay a complaint. They are not happy that they've been rescued, not happy at all!

They may be small but they sure are fiery!

If you would like to name one of these spicy little floofs in return for a $50 donation, be first to comment 'sponsor' on their pic.

PLEASE NOTE: Sponsorship is a tax-deductible donation of $50 to CRD towards our costs. Sponsorship entails naming the selected kitten (or cat) and doesn't ensure a preferential adoption position or serve as an adoption deposit.

His sponsor has named him Scharf (which means spicy in German).

We are already into double figures for our intakes this year, and this wee guy is one of the latest.

He's VERY spicy - he makes Bitey McPhee look like an angel :-) We are still trying to catch mum and two siblings.

Would anyone like to sponsor him for a $50 donation? Be first to comment 'sponsor' and you get to name him.

Bitey McPhee is doing well. He's bitten zero humans today and is now eating on his own.

His fosterer, Rebecca, did a wonderful job last night getting him warmed up and through the night. He's about 8 weeks old and only weighs 450gm (a healthy 8 week old kitten should weigh about 850gm).

These are kittens numbers one and two for 2026.

The wee black boy has been named Bobby by the lady who found him. He cries if we stop cuddling him.

The tabby cutie has unfortunately been bitten on the leg, possibly by a tom cat. He's not weight-bearing but is also demanding cuddles and is safe with one of our vet nurses. If anyone would like to name him in return for a $50 donation, be first to comment 'sponsor' on his pic.

This little baby is our third intake of 2026. He was found on the side of a road (but we don’t know where). The person who found him took him into Animates, where one of our volunteers works. Another volunteer picked him up and brought him back to our intake centre where he was bathed, flea and wormed, and fed. She said he’s the thinnest kitten she’s ever dealt with ☹

He’s still got some fight left in him though as he managed to bite her when she was drying him! (And he also apparently chomped the kind man who found him).

Here he is after a feed, struggling to stay awake.

If the person who found him sees this, can you please get in touch with us asap. We would like to go to where he was found to check to see if there are any more kittens.

His sponsor has named him Bitey McPhee.

This little girl is very lucky. She was found by a fisherman and his son in a river in Dansey’s Pass. She is emaciated, has an upper respiratory infection and likely wouldn’t have survived the night if they hadn’t found her.

Her sponsor has named her Milly.

If you would like to name her in return for a $50 donation, be first to comment 'sponsor' below.

Hello 2026. How did you get here so quickly? 😊

We thought our followers might be interested to see what we got up to in 2025:

🐾 Arrivals: 645 cats and kittens came through our doors (775 in 2024)
🐾 Adopted: 612 cats and kittens found loving homes
🐾 Desexed: 900 were neutered/spayed at our desexing clinic (478 female; 422 male)

For the first time since we began in 2015, our intake numbers have dropped, so perhaps the spaying and neutering message is finally having an effect 😊

We couldn’t do what we do without you, our lovely supporters. It’s thanks to your generosity that together we can make a real difference in the lives of so many cats and kittens. We wish you all a happy 2026!
