Tips to Keep Your Guinea Pigs Warm This Winter! ❄️

Now that winter is here, here are Otago Cavy Club tips to keep your Guinea Pigs warm & healthy:

✅ Bring them indoors if possible – A garage or laundry is great, as long as it’s well ventilated and dry.
✅ Keep hutches raised – Off the cold, damp ground.
✅ Insulate outdoor hutches – Use old blankets or hutch covers to block wind and rain (but still allow airflow).
✅ Add lots of bedding – Pile in plenty of hay so they can snuggle and burrow.
✅ Provide snuggle sacks or fleece hides – Extra comfort and warmth.
✅ Check water bottles twice a day – They can freeze quickly.
✅ Feed a little more – They burn extra energy to stay warm!
✅ Watch for signs of illness – Sneezing, puffed-up posture, or low activity can be warning signs.
✅ Avoid damp bedding – Wet spots lead to chills, so change it often.
