POV: You thought your dog’s growth was 100 percent genetics… but it’s actually a conversation between genes and environment.

In this podcast episode with senior lecturer in animal breeds and genetics, Nick Sneddon, we explore something that quietly shapes your dog for life:

👉 Genetics set the blueprint
👉 Environment helps decide how that blueprint is expressed
👉 Growth, size, and even aspects of behaviour are influenced by early life experiences

This is the part most people miss…

Your dog isn’t just “genetically big” or “genetically small”
They are the result of what their body experienced while growing

-Nutrition
-Stress levels
-Early care
-Developmental environment

All of it matters.

And if you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your dog doesn’t quite “match” what you expected from their breed… you’re not imagining it.

When you understand the story… you respond differently

One of the biggest shifts in my relationship with Roo happened when I stopped focusing on “doing activities” together…and started building shared purpose instead ✨

For Roo and me, that happens to look like running trails with sticks 😂 He runs ahead carrying his stick, waits for me on the path, checks in, then keeps going.

If I throw the stick behind me, he races back to get it and sprints ahead again to catch up. It’s not really about the running. It’s about the teamwork. We’re doing something together. We both have a role. We both understand the game.

That mutual purpose has strengthened our bond more than trying to force “perfect” training ever did. Dogs thrive when they feel involved. When their natural joys are included instead of constantly managed.

Your dog’s version might not look like this. Maybe it’s:
-Sniffing together
-Carrying a toy on walks
-Searching for treats
-Hiking
-Swimming
-Helping on errands
-Learning tricks
-Watching the world together from a park bench

Connection grows fastest when both of you genuinely enjoy the experience 💛

This is actually one of the biggest foundations inside Course 2 of Zoomies to Zen: The Canine Compass 🌿Before we focus on obedience or “fixing” behaviors, we need to understand how to create safety, communication, purpose, and connection with our dogs first. That relationship changes everything ✨

What’s something you and your dog do that feels like a shared ritual or purpose? 👇

Dog Logic Reading Situational Barking: A Series 🎥

Eddy walks in… and the house erupts 😂 Excitement + a little threshold frustration at the door = noise overload

Same behavior, different reasons. We’ll break them down each month.

Inside Zoomies to Zen, Course 2: Canine Compass we cover the whole dog, why they do what they do and how we can better understand it 👀 (COMING SOON!)

Watch the body, not just the bark 👀 Comment “BARK” if your dog does this too 🐾

POV: your dog is already telling you what matters most to them 👀 The secret to easier training and better communication is not forcing motivation. It’s discovering what your dog already LOVES and using that to connect.

For some dogs, it’s food. For others, it’s tug, sniffing, chasing, swimming… And for Roo? 🪵 sticks. Always sticks 😂

When we use what our dogs naturally value, learning becomes less stressful and way more joyful for both of us. That’s where confidence, engagement, and real teamwork start to grow 💛

Your dog’s favorite thing is not a distraction. It’s information. It’s communication. It’s a doorway into their world.

Instead of asking: “How do I get my dog to listen?” Try asking: “What already lights my dog up?”

In this episode of Lisa and Roo, I sit down with Dr Lucy Scott to talk about the foundations that often get skipped:

✨ Thoughtful management
✨ Nervous system safety
✨ Behaviour modification that meets the dog in front of you

And yes… we also open up the conversation around anxiety medication
-Not as a shortcut
-Not as a last resort..But as one of many supportive tools that can help some dogs feel safe enough for the real work to begin

Because behaviour change doesn’t happen when a dog is overwhelmed. It happens when they feel safe enough to learn. If you’ve ever felt stuck, second guessed your approach, or wondered if you’re missing something… this conversation is for you

Today it's not about doing more. It’s about seeing more...So you can respond differently

Pick just ONE thing to notice today. No pressure. Just awareness.

💬 Which one are you starting with?

Most people don’t realise how deeply the gut impacts behaviour. Here's a story about Jordie. He wasn’t “just anxious” or “just shedding.” His body was out of balance… and trying to cope.

When we supported his gut properly, everything else started to shift. This is why I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all feeding. Your dog deserves a plan that actually fits them.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure what to try next… this is your sign to get support.
💛 You’re not failing your dog. You just haven’t been given the right roadmap yet.

🍯Honey learning that the world doesn’t have to feel so overwhelming: loose leash walking and staying calm around other dogs

😀But real, meaningful progress

This is what it looks like when dogs are supported in ways that actually make sense for them AND when their humans are given the tools, guidance and reassurance they need too

Because behind every “well behaved” dog…is a guardian who showed up, felt unsure at times and kept going anyway

Off leash OR freedom on a long line. Dogs nervous systems need freedom. It’s a biological need.

When dogs get safe, appropriate off leash or long line freedom, they get:

🐕natural movement that supports joints and body health
🐾space to sniff, explore, and make choices
🔥a chance to release built up stress and pressure
🌲real nervous system regulation, not just obedience

A constantly restricted dog isn’t “well behaved”…they’re often just coping.

This doesn’t mean letting your dog run wild or unsafe. It means meeting the need in a way that works for your dog.

Long lines count.
Quiet trails count.
Sniffy decompression walks count.

You don’t need perfection. You just need intention.
