PUBLIC NOTICE
National Dog Groomers Association of New Zealand
Recommendations for getting your pets groomed during the current uncertain climate.
Grooming your pet is as much about your pets health as it is about aesthetics and cleanliness. It is something that
should be given careful consideration, to be continued for as long as possible, while owners remain in a position to
get them professionally groomed.
We have been advising our members of ways that can help to keep themselves and their customers distanced from
Covid-19 as long as possible.
Steps we are advising our grooming members are:
Low contact between staff and customers. Some options are…
Keeping human numbers low in reception – one person in reception at a time, family waiting outside.
Handing over your pet outside the salon entry.
Providing instructions for the groom over the phone rather than in person.
Schedule dogs in such a way that they can go straight into the bath.
Having dogs waiting in a crate for drop off and collection.
Postponing appointments if you develop symptoms or become unwell.
Thorough and continued sanitising and disinfecting, including:
Disinfection of door handles, door edges, eftpos machines, pens etc. regularly.
Using salon leads and having customers take their dogs collars and leads with them.
Disinfection of all areas directly after any contact with pets or people.
Discouraging cash payment or using gloves when handling cash.
At the time of writing, all cases of covid-19 have been imported and none were community transferred.
It is very important to get your pets booked in as soon as possible in case the government enforces a lockdown and
your pets grooming requirements may be neglected for an unknown period of time.
While not all pets require regular professional grooming, there is a huge number that do and they would unduly
suffer if they were allowed to get matted by neglecting their grooming needs.
NDGANZ urges all pet owners to consider the needs of their pets as well as their legal obligations (outlined below),
while respecting the premises and health of the groomer. If you have recently returned from overseas or been in
close contact of someone who has, or are becoming unwell, please delay your grooming until you are cleared.
Please respect your groomer's time by giving 48 hours notice of cancellation wherever possible.
