Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other's company, and to promote adoption. Located in Christchurch, Catnap Café opened in July 2018 and is the South Island's first and only cat cafe. Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other’s company and to find forever homes for resc

ue cats. We work alongside Cat Rescue Christchurch to increase the number of stray and abandoned cats being re-homed, to educate the community about the importance of desexing, and promote adoption. The café provides both a permanent home for four resident rescue cats, and a foster home for rescue cats and kittens that are available for the public to adopt. There are usually between 15-20 cats at the cafe at any time. The café is divided into two areas, a food area and a cat area. The food area is much like a normal cafe in which you can order food and drinks (these can also be taken through into the cat area). The cat area is a place for people and cats to hang out together in a fun and cosy environment. As well as providing an adoption service, the cafe is a great place for cat lovers to simply spend time with cats, especially those who aren’t able to have cats of their own such as elderly people in rest homes, students, travellers and renters. Group bookings and other private events are welcome and we also run evening events such as yoga, movie nights, drawing classes, quizzes and board game nights.

Catnap needs your help to make it through the next two weeks 🥺

Running Catnap is financially difficult at the best of times, but a ringworm outbreak has now forced us to close for at least two weeks and with our income already down this year due to the cost of living crisis, we just can’t cover the cost of being closed on our own. We've set up a Givealittle which you can donate to at givealittle.co.nz/cause/help-catnap-survive-a-two-week-closure, or you can donate directly via our website at catnapcafe.co.nz/donation.

Ringworm is a generally harmless, but contagious and hardy, fungal infection. We have a lot of procedures in place to avoid things like this happening but unfortunately there are always risks when dealing with animals and it snuck in undetected with some new arrivals 😿 Because we have had to isolate several of our cats for treatment, and have a huge amount of cleaning to do, we just can’t realistically be open at the moment. Rest assured, the affected cats are all receiving treatment and doing well! 💊🧴

If you can donate to help us make it through the next few weeks it would mean the world to us, our staff, our regulars, and of course all the cats. If you can’t donate, sharing to your friends and family helps too! Every donation or share will help us keep Catnap open so we can continue our mission to help rescue cats find homes! ❤️

We’re embracing the spooky season with a screening of The Addams Family for this month’s movie night! 🎃💀

We still have a few spots left so if you’re looking for something a little quirky to do this Friday evening, jump on our website to book.

It doesn’t get much better than watching a movie in a room full of cats! 🐈‍⬛🎥

Ain't nothing gonna come between these three and clambering up the tallest stuff they can find 🪜 Sometimes it's humans, other times it's a MonkeeTree, either way no eyes*, no problem 🐈‍⬛

* These three had severe eye infections when they arrived in care, Rei still has one of her eyes, but her siblings Zen and Sunsi have none - eyes-shmeyes 🙀

Want to know how we get photos like these? Check out our latest reel for a run down (and let us know if you’d be keen for us to run a wee cat photography course) 📷

To be honest, Mark is pretty easy going and will accept cool mums too ☺️

Jenny went to her forever home recently! 🐈🏡

Jenny wasn’t with us for long as she wasn’t a big fan of our other cats but we enjoyed getting to know her and she totally won us all over with her super sweet personality. She may not be too keen on other cats but with people she is all smooches and purrs! And always eager for play time!

We bet she is loving being the centre of attention in her new home! ❤️

Helly has been adopted! 🐈🏡

Helly is one of the sweetest cats we have ever meet, but definitely prefers not to have too many people around at once. She would hang out the back in our private cat area most of the day but would always come out into the main room for cuddles with us after hours. She liked to follow us around demanding attention, and roll around on our laps, purring her head off 🥰 She was a favourite among our staff and volunteers, always helping with litter tray cleaning in the mornings! 🧼

Helly’s adopters fell in love with her at first sight and after visiting her regularly for a few weeks, took her home! We’ve heard from them that she is demanding many snuggles and always gets the midnight munchies! ❤️

Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get an adoption photo of Helly as she was feeling shy but we’ve included a couple of pics that her adopters have taken during her first week in her new home! 📷

They’ve been here for a while now but we completely forgot to do an intro post for our newest siblings Forrest and Jenny!

Forrest is a real sweetheart and settled in here very quickly. He’s ultra charming and will win you over faster than you can say “life is like a box of chocolates!” He loves to lay in your lap, get real cosy and give you very cute head boops. He’s quite needy and follows us around demanding attention! He can be very energetic and playful too, and will literally barrel around the room, jumping from tower to tower! 😸

Jenny is also affectionate and playful, but a little more shy than her brother at first. She warms up quickly though, especially when it’s playtime! She’s not a huge fan of other cats so she probably won't be at the cafe for long (we are taking applications for her now!), but with people, she’s all smooches and purrs! 😻

Come say hi to this iconic duo! 👋

Sunsi gave us all a fright a few weeks ago when she had a short but unexpected seizure. She’s doing fine now but, after a second episode a week later, has been diagnosed with epilepsy.

She’s just started medication to manage this, and hopefully prevent further episodes, however it can cause sedation and wobbliness for the first couple of weeks while she gets used to it. So just a heads up if you’re visiting and notice she’s not quite her normal self and a little out of it, she is okay, just adjusting.

Despite her health issues, Sunsi is such a lovely, sweet, happy, brave and playful kitten. Rest assured she is getting so much love and care, and we’re keeping an extra close eye on her ❤️

Forrest and Jenny when we tell them their Purina Pro Plan dinner is ready! 😻

Purina make some delicious (at least according to our cats) cat food! 😺 They’re a huge help and we’re stoked to have them on board to feed all of our rescue cats! Thanks Purina! ❤️

Millie went to her new home recently! 🐈‍⬛🏡

It didn’t take long for this sweet girl to find the perfect home! Her adopter was smitten from the moment they met ❤️

Millie started off quite shy when she first arrived here but once she felt comfortable she became very friendly and affectionate. She went from hiding out the back most of the time to sitting on people’s laps! We all fell in love with her and enjoyed many cuddles while she was here 🥰

Little Foot has been adopted! 🐈🏡

We’ve loved having Little Foot at the cafe for the past few months and would often find her settled on people’s laps 🧘 Not surprisingly, she convinced a lot of people to put in adoption applications for her! 🥰📄

She was born missing part of her left foot, hence the name, though you’d hardly notice watching her hoon around the room! Little Foot is always full of beans and keen to play, her foot deformity sure doesn’t slow her down! 🤪

A bit of a wild card, she can be adorably sweet and snuggly one minute and sassy and chaotic the next, it wasn’t too uncommon to see her a little stroppy with some of the other cats if they were doing something she wasn’t a fan of 😼

Before coming to Catnap she was fostered with dogs and loved her time with them, so we’re stoked that her new family includes a dog brother! He’s also a tripod so they are going to make the cutest pair! 🐕🐈

A warm welcome to Mark and Helly, who have recently joined the Rescued Floor at Catnap Industries 😸

Mark and Helly have been with us for a wee while now but it’s taken them a bit of time to get comfortable in their new roles in MDR, the Mandatory Department of Relaxing, here at Catnap. Mark is out and about most of the time now and Helly pops in and out depending on how busy we are. They both love attention and are very affectionate and smoochy ❤️

Mark is a real sweetheart who will - once he’s gotten to know you a bit - curl up on your lap for a snuggle. Sometimes he prefers to observe from afar, especially if it’s busy, but other times he’ll come bounding right at you with smooches and purrs 🥰

Helly is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet, but it’ll take a bit longer for her to get confident around you. Once she trusts you though she’ll follow you around demanding attention, and if she settles on your lap, she’ll roll around purring, happy as a clam😻

This is the last week before school holidays so it’s a great time to book in a visit to meet these cuties! 😉
