Christchurch Icelandic Horse Treks Horse treks from 1 to 2.5 hrs in small groups along scenic tracks. All riding levels are catered for and beginners are taken on a lead rope.

We offer rides from 1 to 2.5 hours in small groups of up to 4 persons. The riding tempo is adjusted to suit the level of the riders. Icelandic Horses are small but they are very strong and can easily carry even
heavy adults. They have a friendly nature and are relaxed and easy to handle. On all our horses you can enjoy the s

pecial gait called "toelt" which is unique to
Icelandic Horses.It is about as fast as trot, but much more comfortable to ride. Opening hours are flexible and bookings are essential as the departure times vary depending on the tides. Our business is located close to Spencer Park Camping Ground and 20 minutes from the city centre by car.

We are very sad to announce that Hjalli and Tinna had to be retired unexpectedly at the end of last year due to tendon issues. They both took many riders on our treks, Tinna for the past 10 years and Hjalli was one of the four foundation horses of this business serving us since 2012! They are leaving a big gap in our four-legged crew and we really miss these reliable horses.
Thank you so much Mel and Alan from for taking them on. I know they will be very well looked after and loved by you and all the kids❤️

Another wonderful week, this time with Hekluhestar in the south of Iceland. This time we weren’t so lucky with the weather but the stunning scenery of the highlands along with riding excellent horses within the free running herd and in the company of lovely people made for an unforgettable experience.
Thank you very much for taking me along for the ride!
Looking forward to riding my own horses again but if you ever get the chance to experience the real deal in Iceland I can highly recommend it❤️

A big shoutout to the team at Pólar Hestar. I had an amazing week of true Icelandic horse riding with a free running herd. Excellent horses which are incredibly fit, fast, comfortable and responsive. The company is family run since 40 years and most of their clients are returning for many years. Super friendly and well organised. And the best weather (almost too hot!) to top it off😎
