Hoof health! No hoof, no animal!!

I’ve seen some VERY gnarly hooves recently including one that had hoof rot so bad the amount of destroyed and infected tissue was horrendous and pus was oozing out the “sole”. Animals shouldn’t be limping or walking around on their knees.. Regular trimming by an experienced trimmer will make the world of difference to your animals! A trim done in 2 minutes is not a proper trim at all.. I’ve seen some poor trims done at shearing time and heels so long the animal is walking with club feet. 🫣

Hi everyone! It’s been a CHAOTIC several days with me shifting to my new farm in north Canterbury! Couldn’t have picked a better day (Sunday) to move all the cows, calves, sheep and goat (horses and chickens yet to come). I arrived to find out my water connection had broken so we had NO water (and no power - solar connection 2 weeks delayed), so it’s been very stressful! I have a HUGE wait list I’m working through, so please be patient, I’m living off a generator and phone data and no hot water 😅 So things aren’t happening fast BUT the animals are all happy so that’s the main thing!!

When your goat is almost as tall as a 1yo steer! 🐐 🐮

A lot of you already know my big news.. but I am MOO-VING ! I have a lot on my plate with disbudding but also shifting, getting things tidied up etc!

This week I am basically fully booked. The week starting 22nd I have limited availability. The last week of September I will be doing almost no bookings as I am doing a major shift of farms and have a lot of livestock to get shifted along with my own belongings! From October will be based out of North Canterbury so those of you north of the Waimak will become my “locals”.

A busy despite FREEZING 🥶 day in Oxford and Cust disbudding calves today! My car thermometer started at 7 degrees when I left home and ended on 2 degrees 🫣 Everykne today got the “full Monty” getting disbudded, vaccinated and castrated the boys! Much easier doing it all while they’re sedated and having pain relief on board.

My diary for the next month is really full with limited spaces for smaller jobs. Message the page for any prices (include your location, number of calves and their age now). 😊

Lameness in this muddy time!

I’m seeing A LOT of lame animals (sheep, goats and cattle). I have talked about hoof wall separation in an earlier post which is still proving a bit problematic in a lot of animals however when a combination of mud/grass/hay builds up and becomes trapped between the toes it festers away into a bacterial infection (known as thrush in horses or hoof rot in other species). If your animal is limping or even better (not limping) but you can see crap packed in, lift the hoof and remove it. If there’s an infection it’ll look black on the debri and stinky (maybe even red and p***y between the toes. You then need to give a good spray with a antibacterial hoof spray like alamycin, koppertox etc

2025/26 Disbudding season has started for me! And it’s set to be a very crazy few months!! I prefer to disbud calves between 4-6 weeks (older than that gets charged an older calf fee this season).

26th August - Amberley /Rangiora.

These days only have a couple of spots left. Areas local to Lincoln can be arranged most afternoons
