🐮🐮 CALF DISBUDDING for 2026 🐮 🐮

I’m a Qualified Veterinary Technician. All calves are sedated, given local anaesthetic as well as long lasting pain relief. This is the best practice way to disbud calves in line with MPI and the NZVA’s recommendation that calves receive all three. Local anaesthetic wears off approximately half an hour after it’s given, after that your calf walks around with a smashing headache. That is why I include long lasting pain relief with all disbuds. This allows me to check navels for infection, ring any bulls or give vaccinations at the same time (all stress free for the calf)!

I prefer to do calves around the 4-6 week mark as they handle it better. Last season I was busier than ever. If you’d like to book in your calves, please save my page, or send me a message, don’t leave it til it’s too late! ⏰

I’ve had THREE messages the past week where I’m told one of their R1 (older calf) is “down” and cannot get up. Other signs have included runny poo, extreme fluffy coats, rubbed/chaffed fur, very underweight and riddled with lice. All three owners have given their animal the best chance at fighting/treating it, but sometimes it’s too late.

I try to make informative posts at the right seasons about the importance of staying on top of drenching at the right time (ESPECIALLY for young stock), the same with hooves and preventing lameness. All cases have had faecal egg counts done (one with a severe burden). Your stock should NOT be “light” heading into Winter. I always recommend that having a bit extra weight is a good thing especially so they have leeway to lose it if feed runs scarce, it’s exceptionally cold etc. For an animal to stay warm they need good feed and body condition. But if they’re full of worms, or have lice, those worms are eating all the nutrients and sucking their blood, so you’re just wasting feed, money and watching your stock go backwards. And it is veryyy hard to get them to bounce back, it can be a costly and timely process and affects the long term growth.

I was routinely vaccinating a highland calf earlier in the year and beneath all the gorgeous fluff was hundreds of wriggling lice. A simple check when you put hay/balage/grain out will save you money, time and mean your stock are being regularly assessed and cared for respectively.

I am ALWAYS happy to give advice (I’m always learning too!)! I offer lifestyle block consultancy sessions where you can ask all sorts of species specific questions about health procedures, nutrition, signs of ill health to look out for, what products you should have in a wee kit for those “just in case” moments… I hate seeing any animal suffer and this is the whole philosophy behind my business. I try to keep prices affordable (no horrid mileage charge or per minute job charge like the clinics do), so please think about the above and if you need help with anything or want to book a consultancy session just message the page 📃 Calving is just around the corner and when you’re responsible for a neonates development, you need to know what you’re doing!

Pictured below is my 5 month old calf, Munchkin, in his new “Unicorn” jacket (admittedly it was for my little Heifer, Milo, but it was too big.. oops!), he thinks he looks pretty snazzy though! 🙈🥰🥲

Such a good pig 🐷 for his hoof trim today! Pigs can be very intelligent and you can teach them to sit and lie down which makes doing things like trimming hooves a lot easier without the need for having them sedated. Things you can do to make it easier:

~ Have a contained area
~ Ample (I mean LOTS) of treats/food scraps
~ Handle and pat your pigs legs

No more bookings taken until 1st June (Winter ❄️)

Late next week I’m heading away for 2 weeks, I’ll have extremely limited coverage (some places none) and that will be quite nice! Hoping to spot some Cheetahs 🐆 and Elephants 🐘 and enjoy no 3:30am starts 🥱

And don’t forget, those local to Oxford, for the month of June, I’ll be offering “in home” visits for a “cat nail trim/worm treatment” for just $45 from the comfort of your own home 🏡 , no stressful car rides! 🐈‍⬛ 🐈

I’ve already got some bookings for the first week of June in Eyrewell Forest, Cust & Ladbrooks so if you’d like to join one of those get in touch in the next week to book in 📕

Upcoming trips:

Next week (date tbc) - Darfield to Chch (2 spaces available)

Weds 15th - Swannanoa & surrounds (1 space available)

Services- Goat/Sheep/Pig hoof trims, goat/sheep/pig/calf drenching, lifestyle block consultancy and livestock health & nutrition advice. Autumn 🍂 is the most important time to be on top of hoof condition and drenching before Winter arrives.

Please note you MUST have adequate yards/ways to confine your stock. These can be basic but they must be sturdy. Recently I was bitten (and the owner) by their pig who couldn’t be restrained safely.

For any questions, or prices, please message the page with full details of your job. Qualified veterinary technician making routine animal health procedures more affordable

Cuteness alert 🚨 ‼️

How gorgeous is this young ball of fluff 🥰 This little one had her nait tag put in and her cousin got booster vaccinated yesterday along with their mothers getting drenched.

It is so important to vaccinate your young stock against the clostridial diseases as well as drenching for parasites (internal and external). Unfortunately I’ve heard of multiple cases in the last 12 months of stock dropping dead from suspected clostridial diseases or worm burdens. This is all very much preventable for very minimal effort and cost and I’m more than happy to help with small or larger numbers.

Autumn 🍂 is one of the important times to drench your livestock so if you haven’t done so already and would like help then just message me! I carry drench for sheep, goats, cattle and pigs
