A princess has arrived, just in time for King’s Birthday weekend!
A delightful zebra foal was born on Friday 15 May at Orana, and she is full of the zoomies (but also lots of naps).
Our yet-to-be-named girl is already full of personality. Both baby and Mum, Asale are doing well, and older brother Herbie is adjusting to not being the baby anymore.

If you’re visiting this weekend, slow down… you might just catch a glimpse of this special wee girl – the first female zebra foal born at Orana in over 30 years.

If you don’t see Asale and her baby in their habitat, pop back later as they may be resting.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ The scientific name for western lowland gorilla is gorilla gorilla gorilla. It seems like something a zookeeper would say to be funny but it actually follows biological classification rules:
Genus: Gorilla > Species: Gorilla gorilla > Subspecies: Gorilla gorilla gorilla

This is because they are the “nominate subspecies,” which means they were the first discovered and originally named population of their species, causing the name to repeat across all three levels.

It’s been a strong breeding season for kākāriki karaka (orange-fronted parakeet) here at Orana. With the final release of birds to the wild earlier this week, we are happy to report that we had 23 chicks hatch, 18 of them have been released to the wild, the remaining birds will stay at Orana to join the breeding programme. The birds that stay at Orana play an important role supporting existing populations and, over time, helping to establish new ones in safe places. Together with The Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust, nearly 50 birds have been released to the wild this season. This is an important boost for a species with less than 500 individuals in the wild, as every single one makes a difference.

Throughout the season, birds were transferred to sites along the Hurunui River in Canterbury, as well as Anchor Island in Fiordland (home to kākāpō). At their release site, the birds spend the first few days in soft-release aviaries to help them acclimatise to their new home and allowing DOC staff to monitor them. Transmitters are fitted to some of the females, to help track nesting activity.

Since joining the programme, our team has helped to raise over 160 kākāriki karaka, with close to 150 individuals released to the wild.

Your support of Orana helps make this possible. Together, we’re helping secure a future for this special species.

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ Kererū are the only native bird on New Zealand's mainland that is able to eat the large fruit of many of our native trees, like karaka, tawa, miro, and taraire - which can be up to 3cm wide! This means they have an important role in native forest regeneration.

You can help kererū and other native species thrive by planting native shrubs and trees, trapping in your backyard or joining a local trapping group.
