As we gathered under the stars this Matariki, we were honoured to see Dark Sky Project in Takapō featured on Seven Sharp , marking 20 years since astrotourism first began in this special place.

The story highlights not only the awe-inspiring beauty of the night sky but also the mātauranga Māori that underpins the experience. With kōrero from mana whenua, General Manager Victoria Campbell, and co-founders Graeme Murray and Hide Ozawa, it celebrates the unique connection Arowhenua, Waihao and Moeraki have with the stars — and how that knowledge is woven into every visitor journey.

We are proud to stand alongside our partners and communities as kaitiaki of this experience, where the night sky becomes a space for learning, reflection and storytelling.

Dark Sky Project celebrates 20 years of astrotourism in Aotearoa!

From humble beginnings on Mount John to a world-renowned stargazing experience, our journey has been driven by innovation, partnership, and deep cultural connection.

Our new documentary explores how Takapō helped shape the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve and highlights the legacy of our co-founders, Graeme Murray and Hide Ozawa, alongside Ngāi Tahu leaders and storytellers.

Our kaimahi volunteer their time, helping to restore native ecosystems across Te Tai o Poutini. From replanting wetlands to protecting biodiversity, this mahi speaks to the values we live by.

A hīkoi to help save a forest 🌿

Our Hollyford Wilderness Experience whānau recently embarked on a special fundraising hīkoi into Waitai Lodge — a unique trip dedicated to supporting the vital conservation work of the Hollyford Conservation Trust . This initiative underscores our commitment to preserving the unique biodiversity of the Hollyford Valley.

The Hollyford Conservation Trust's work in predator control has led to the resurgence of native species such as the kakaruai/South Island robin and mātātā/fernbird. Their efforts have revitalized the valley's ecosystem, bringing back the vibrant birdsong that once filled the air.

As kaitiaki, we are dedicated to ensuring that the natural and cultural heritage of this taonga endures for future generations. Our collaboration with the Trust reflects our shared vision of a thriving, predator-free environment in the heart of Fiordland.

Ngā mihi nui to the Hollyford Conservation Trust for their unwavering dedication to conservation. Together, we walk the path of guardianship, honoring the past and safeguarding the future.

We’re proud to guide manuhiri (visitors) through an area our tīpuna (ancestors) have travelled for generations. The Dart River / Te Awa Whakatipu was once a vital pounamu (greenstone) trail, rich in history, mahinga kai (traditional food gathering), and cultural significance.

This role is all about sharing the magic of this place—paddling through pristine waters, exploring the spectacular Rockburn Chasm, and delivering experiences that connect people to both land and story.
