This is the conversation nobody enjoys, so let’s just have it.
When a coat mats badly, we can’t always brush it out. And the honest reason is this: matting is essentially the coat felting itself into a solid sheet, and that sheet is attached to skin. Working it out isn’t a matter of patience. It’s a matter of pulling on skin, repeatedly, for a long time.
There’s a point where the kind thing — the only kind thing — is to clip it off and start again.
Nobody wants to hear “we had to take it short.” But a short coat grows back in a few months. A dog who now dreads the table takes a lot longer to fix than that.
We’d always rather help you avoid the situation than manage it. That’s what the brushing chat is really about.

💙 A groom is about so much more than looking good.

This beautiful girl, Daisy, is one of our regulars, and you might notice she’s missing part of her left ear.

At one of Daisy’s recent grooms, we noticed a lump that hadn’t been there before, so we let her owners know. They acted quickly and booked a visit to the vet, where it was confirmed to be cancer.

Thankfully, because it was caught early, Daisy was able to have surgery and is now doing incredibly well. ❤️

One of the special things about seeing your dogs regularly is that we get to know them so well. We notice the little changes—whether it’s a new lump, a change in their skin or coat, or something just doesn’t seem quite right. While we’re not vets, sometimes those little observations can make all the difference.

We think Daisy looks absolutely beautiful, and we’re so happy to have her back for cuddles, treats, and grooms. 🐾💙

Some ears get more air than others.
A prick-eared dog has a canal that’s essentially open to the breeze. A drop-eared dog — spaniels, cockapoos, retrievers, plenty of the crosses we see — has a warm, dim, humid little environment under there. Add hair growing in the canal and a swim in the Waimak, and you’ve got a very different situation.
It doesn’t mean drop ears are a problem. It means they’re worth actually looking at rather than assuming.
The check takes ten seconds. Lift the ear. Look. Have a sniff, honestly. You’re looking for skin that’s a normal pale pink, no strong smell, no discharge, no heat.
Anything else, and that’s a vet conversation — not a home one.

The nail question we get most often: “how do I know if they’re too long?”
Here’s the low-tech test. Stand your dog on a hard floor — tiles, lino, decking. Listen. If you can hear a click as they walk, the nails are touching down before the pads do. That’s your answer, and you didn’t need a single tool to work it out.
Long nails don’t just get in the way. They change how a dog stands, because the nail hits first and the toe rocks backwards to compensate. Do that for months and you’re altering the load going through the whole leg.
Some dogs wear their nails down naturally on footpaths and never need much help. Others — especially the ones doing most of their walking on grass — need a hand every few weeks.

Cold mornings do something sneaky to a coat.
When the temperature drops, most dogs put on undercoat — that soft, dense layer sitting underneath the longer guard hairs. It’s doing exactly what it’s meant to do. The trouble is it’s also the layer that traps moisture, and Christchurch winter delivers a lot of moisture. Wet undercoat that never fully dries is where the problems start.
So the winter job isn’t less grooming. It’s different grooming. Less taking off, more getting through — down to the skin, not just over the top of it.
If your dog comes in from a wet walk and still feels faintly damp at the skin two hours later, that’s the signal.
