FROM CPDW inc ⚠️ PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY STARTS BEFORE THE DOGS ENTER THE WATER.

When we accept responsibility for client dogs, we also accept responsibility for assessing environmental hazards before exposing them to unnecessary risk.

Heavy rain, flooding, fast-flowing rivers, debris and rapidly changing water levels are foreseeable hazards. A river can change dramatically within hours. Yesterday’s conditions do not guarantee today’s safety.

CPDW Inc. contacted the dog walker involved. They advised they had checked online information, had been at the same location the previous day when conditions were normal, and left shortly after arriving once they saw the river had risen. They also stated the dogs had already entered the water because “they run off ahead, as dogs do.”

From CPDW Inc.’s perspective, this is not the standard of professional risk management we advocate for. Risk assessment should occur before client dogs are exposed to a foreseeable hazard—not afterwards.

Thankfully, every dog returned home safely. However, a fortunate outcome should never be confused with good risk management.

This post is not about naming or shaming. The business has been removed for privacy. Our goal is to educate dog owners and promote professional standards across New Zealand’s dog handling industry.
