There are 3 types of fascia.
Fascia is a fine layer of connective tissue that forms a web-like sheet between and around the structures of the body.
There are 3 types of fascia:
Superficial fascia - under the skin, stores water and fats, allows blood vessels and nerves to pass through, provides cushion and insulation.
Visceral fascia - covers, protects, suspends the organs within their cavities.
Deep fascia - covers muscles and muscle groups, allows them to slide over surrounding structures without damage, provides muscle connections known as myofascial chains. Every muscle fiber has a fascial binding making muscle and fascia functionally linked.
Normal, hydrated, healthy fascia can stretch and move without restriction. Nerves and circulatory vessels are wrapped in fascia.
Fascia can become stuck through chronic stress, overuse, inflammation, inactivity or injury. When stuck it squeezes the structures it surrounds, inhibiting movement and circulation, creating pressure, malnourishment and painful restriction.
Fascial restrictions can be so firm that they limit movement, pull the body out of alignment, distort related muscle function, impair soundness, cause proprioception issues, behavioral problems, myfascial pain and soft tissue injuries.
Massage with Myofascial Release is a whole body, hands-on approach to balancing tensions in the musculoskeletal system by gently stretching, separating and rehydrating the different layers of tissue.
Benefits of massage with myofascial release include improved muscle function, improved joint alignment, mobilized fascia, stronger muscles, increased stride length, enhanced relaxation and improved overall performance and overall well-being

Please note that all behaviour needs to be taken in the context/ environment in which the horse finds themselves when you see these behaviours. Note that ourselves and OUR behaviour is also part of the horse’s environment. All behaviour needs to be considered in context ie. what happened prior, during and after and what is the horse's history regarding training, healthy/injury and experiences with humans, other horses and various environments, etc.

If your horse is snoozing under a tree and yawns, most likely the horse is not experiencing fear. (Although they could potentially be experiencing discomfort or pain.)

If you've just done or are doing some groundwork, round pen work, ridden work, gone for a hack, or dentistry, bodywork, worming or vaccinations, or even just tying up and brushing your horse, you MAY see these signs and more. The more of these behaviours you see, the more likely that you are seeing a response to fear, stress pain, discomfort or frustration or a combination.

Change our behaviour, the environment, lower our expectations and review our training plans to avoid seeing these behaviours in a training or handling context.

All behaviour has function, it has a purpose for the horse, even if we don’t know what it is or understand it, horses behave in certain ways for a reason. They are masters of subtle communication and we need to learn to read those subtle signs and the big signs as well, not brush them off.

Also consider that if fear as been ruled out, that these behaviours may be caused by the horse's internal environment such as pain or injury, ie. always rule out pain as a cause for certain behaviours.

This is fundamental advice regardless of the discipline in which you ride, I have built my method and career around all of this, if you
Study the greatest horsemen in the world you will see all of the points in action. This was said by one of the best modern horsemen bill steinkrause.

“No. 1. Get your tack and equipment just right, and then forget about it and concentrate on the horse.

No. 2. The horse is bigger than you are, and it should carry you. The quieter you sit, the easier this will be for the horse.

No. 3. The horse's engine is in the rear. Thus, you must ride your horse from behind, and not focus on the forehand simply because you can see it.

No. 4. It takes two to pull. Don't pull. Push.

No. 5. For your horse to be keen but submissive, it must be calm, straight and forward.

No. 6. When the horse isn`t straight, the hollow side is the difficult side.

No. 7. The inside rein controls the bending, the outside rein controls the speed.

No. 8. Never rest your hands on the horse's mouth. You make a contract with it: "You carry your head and I'll carry my hands."

No. 10. Once you've used an aid, put it back.

No. 11. You can exaggerate every virtue into a defect.

No. 12. Always carry a stick, then you will seldom need it.

No. 13. If you`ve given something a fair trial, and it still doesn't work, try something else—even the opposite.

No. 14. Know when to start and when to stop. Know when to resist and when to reward.

No. 15. If you're going to have a fight, you pick the time and place.

No. 16. What you can't accomplish in an hour should usually be put off until tomorrow.

No. 17. You can think your way out of many problems faster than you can ride your way out of them.

No. 18. When the horse jumps, you go with it, not the other way around.

No. 19. Don`t let over-jumping or dull routine erode the horse's desire to jump cleanly. It's hard to jump clear rounds if the horse isn't trying.

No. 20. Never give up until the rail hits the ground.

No. 21. Young horses are like children—give them a lot of love, but don't let them get away with anything.

No. 22. In practice, do things as perfectly as you can; in competition, do what you have to do.

No. 23. Never fight the oats.

No. 24. The harder you work, the luckier you get."

Exactly ..... horses that are in taught to carry themselves in a correct frame will be more comfortable. A long rein might seem more comfortable but biomechanically it isn't 🤔
