Want a rock-solid "stay" even around distractions? It all comes down to building great impusle control. 🐕
Watch how focused they are as the camera pans past. That doesn't happen by accident, and it definitely doesn't happen overnight.
Here is how we teach impulse control for a high-distraction moment like this:
Back to Basics:
Building good impulse control starts with the utmost basics: handler-relationship, engagement, leash manners and a generalized sit. Once you nail these you can then practice around distractions.
Value over Force:
We don't force them to sit; we make sitting the most rewarding choice they can make. We "pay" heavily for the duration. Be it treats, further engagement, or even the reward of being able to explore with freedom (we love a good environmental based reward!)
Managing the Proximity:
Sitting next to your best friend is way harder than sitting alone. We practice at a distance first before asking them to shoulder-to-shoulder like this.
Varying Personalities:
Look at the different breeds here! From high-drive working dogs to happy-go-lucky doodles, impulse control looks different for every dog, but the foundation remains the same.
Consistency beats intensity every single time. 🌲✨
