With the start of July come the first few ā€˜early bird’ deliveries out on farm. On Friday night we got to assist a Valois Blacknose mum bring her twins into the world. Not the first baby to be named after the vet who delivered her, but possibly one of the cutest. Both mum Macey and twins Harvey & Izzy are doing very well.

Please welcome our new Vet Ryan, who lands in NZ today! Ryan starts work on Monday and will be helping to fill the void that Albert has left and reduce the work load on our farm vets.
Originally from County Armagh, Ireland, Ryan graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2017. He has worked predominately in Scotland as a farm vet since graduating and spent time working as a farm vet in Ashburton in 2021. He has a strong passion for all aspects of farm work, with a particular interest in dairy fertility and calf rearing. Outside of work, Ryan is a keen triathlete and enjoys spending time on the open water. Ryan and his wife are excited to explore all that New Zealand has to offer.

🐾 Kevin here—yes, the Kevin, the beloved (and incredibly handsome) black Labrador currently holding down the fort back in Scotland. And let me just clear something up right away: James, the Scottish bloke you all know as the horse vet at Evolution Vets, belongs to me. Not to the googly-eyed paperweight he calls ā€œRocky.ā€ That rock has no emotional depth.

James has been galloping around with the Evolution team for almost two years now (come November!), mainly wrangling horses, but he’s been known to dabble in the small animal world when needed—just to keep things interesting. From equine emergencies to the occasional surprise smallie consult, he’s your guy.

And guess what? Today is James’ 30th birthday! šŸŽ‰ He’s celebrating it in the best possible way—back home in Scotland, spending some long-overdue quality time with yours truly. (I’ve got birthday cuddles and slobbery kisses lined up just for him.)

So please join me—his actual pet—in wishing James the happiest 30th birthday! šŸ’™ Evolution Vets wouldn’t be the same without him… and neither would I.

Happy Birthday, James! šŸŽ‚šŸ“šŸ¶šŸŖØ (Rocky insisted I include him… sigh.)

Guess who we belong to! This should be a relatively easy one.. especially if you have dealt with our Scottish chap. (Not many guys to guess from now that Albert is gone- so take a guess between Juan, James and Ryan )

🪨 Rocky here—loyal, reliable, and undeniably low maintenance. As a pet rock, I’m everything my human could ever want: no fuss, no mess, and always exactly where he left me. I don’t need walks, baths, or belly rubs (though I wouldn’t say no). Just a quiet companion for an equine vet who’s always on the move. Between horse calls and hitting the road, I’m the ideal travel buddy. And yes—he genuinely talks to me. Often.

But don’t be fooled—I’m not his only pet.

🐾 I’m Kevin, the real MVP. A black Labrador currently living the good life back in Scotland. I may not be riding shotgun these days, but I’ll always be top dog in his heart. He misses me more than he lets on, and I know every time he sees a dog, he thinks of me. He’s the kind of guy who’d FaceTime his dog if I could answer (I’ve tried, but paws and screens don’t mix).

So who do we belong to?

He’s our kilt-wearing (not really, but wouldn’t that be great?) equine vet with a Scottish accent smoother than a single malt. He’s not just good with horses—he’s also a bit of a muso, able to pick up an instrument or two and actually play it, which is rare enough in a vet clinic. Lover of good tunes, good coffee, and pets that don’t ask for much (hi again, it’s me—Rocky).

Whether he’s tuning a guitar or checking a hoof, he’s the cool, calm, and musically gifted Scot we’re proud to call ours. šŸŽøšŸ“šŸŖØšŸ¾

*disclaimer* Rocky may or may not actually exist... we will leave it for you to decide. 🤪

How much are spring health issues limiting your herd's performance?

Thanks to some excellent record keeping from one of our clients, we were able to show the clear impact of milk fever and endometritis on their herd performance. High levels of endometritis in herds are almost always associated with nutritional issues over transition (energy & calcium).
Making sure your springer, colostrum & early lactation diets (& the transition between them) are well set up to fulfil your herd's nutritional requirements is crucial in setting your herd up for success!

Contact us today if you would like to discuss;
* Springer, colostrum and/or early lactation diets
* Mineral supplementation
* Pre-calving BCS - how well are the cows doing after poor weather?
* Monitoring cows over spring (with or without wearable technology)

Introducing JonƩ (pronounced you-nay)

If you haven’t already met JonĆ©, you’re in for a treat (and possibly a long chat—she’s very chatty..)! JonĆ© joined the Evolution Vets team just under a year ago, but she’s no stranger to the world of vet nursing, with over 5 years of experience under her belt. After taking a 2-year break from the industry, she found herself unexpectedly drawn back—and what she thought was just filling in time turned out to be the best decision ever. That break reminded her just how much she loves being a vet nurse, and we’re so lucky to have her passion and heart back in a clinic.

She may have been a bit of a personality hire (you’ll know why within minutes of meeting her), but lucky for us—she’s also really good at her job.

JonĆ© is all about the pink life—which makes Evolution Vets the perfect fit, thanks to our pink branding. She loves that she gets to wear her favourite colour to work every day (a total dream come true!).

With two kids and a three-day work week, JonĆ© has found her perfect work/life balance. She brings warmth, energy, and a huge heart to every shift—especially when it comes to small dogs and cats. She’s got a real soft spot for the feisty felines and lives for the challenge of befriending a spicy cat. Winning over a hissing fluffball? That’s her kind of victory.

JonĆ© has a natural gift for connecting with clients, always ready for a laugh, a story, or a heartfelt chat. Just a heads-up: if you start a conversation, you might want to clear your schedule—you’ll definitely want to stick around!

She’s always raving about how much she loves her coworkers and says Evolution Vets is the best clinic she’s ever worked at—and we feel exactly the same about her. šŸ’•
