Lice in sheep aren't just a minor nuisance; they're a shared threat to flock health, wool quality, and farm profitability. Yet, some farmers are still not treating lice effectively, or at all. This inaction doesn't just harm one property; it compromises the effectiveness of treatments across entire districts and imposes costs on responsible neighbours. To be read more click this link ...

Winter care for working dogs

Its not just your shorn sheep you need to think about during these cold spells, but also your working dogs.
Keeping warm requires a lot of energy utilisation, so you may find you need to up the amount of feed you are giving your dogs to make sure they don’t lose weight.
Better still, keeping them warm in their kennels when not working will help them maintain body condition, and improve their comfort. Insulating kennels or investing in some dog coats can help with this. Giving your working dogs something extra to help keep them warm will mean they will have a lower requirement for food and more energy for a day of mustering. We have a good selection of dog coats suitable for working dogs - check out your local clinic.

🦷 Let’s kick off dental awareness season with some Myth Busting! 🦷

“Wild dogs and wolves eat bones, so it must be safe for my dog too.”
👉 Not true — and here’s why:

While it’s true that wild canines (like wolves and African wild dogs) do chew and sometimes eat bones, it’s a mistake to assume this is safe for our pets.

1. Bones are also risky for wild dogs and wolves — we just can’t observe the consequences.
• In the wild, animals often die young. If they crack a tooth and get an abscess or suffer a gut obstruction from bone fragments, nature will take its course, and they will unfortunately not survive long.
• Studies of wild wolf skulls show a high rate of broken and infected teeth from chewing bones. These wolves would have experienced pain and discomfort.
• Internal injuries from sharp bones are also likely a factor in early mortality, though this risk is slightly reduced with raw bones and goes unrecorded in the wild. Obstruction of the oesophagus or gut is still a high risk with raw bones.

2. Domestic dogs live longer — and we’re responsible for their health.
• A broken tooth in a pet dog can cause chronic pain, infection, and expensive dental surgery. Avoiding giving them hard objects to chew will help prevent unnecessary tooth and gum damage.
• Dogs do not understand the damage a bone can do when swallowed so will often swallow fragments and even whole bones. These can choking, blockages or perforations in the gut, constipation and severe pain when defecating (from bone shards).

3. The risk far outweigh the benefit.
• There’s no nutritional benefit from chewing bones that can’t be achieved with safe alternatives (like dental chews or pet safe rubber toys).
• Cooked bones are especially dangerous — brittle and sharp — but even raw bones can be hazardous.

Bottom line: Just because wild animals do something, doesn’t mean it’s safe or smart for our pets.

It’s back - the Big Pet Dental Deal is here for July and August! 🦷🐾

Last year’s dental deal helped so many pets get on top of their dental health, and now it’s time to follow up.

If your pet had a dental check last year, book them in again to stay on track. And if you missed out, this is the perfect time to get started.

🐶 Why every year?
Dental disease can come back quickly, even after a clean. A yearly dental check helps catch issues early - before they cause pain or serious health problems.

🦷 What’s included in this year’s Big Pet Dental Deal?
✅ A FREE Dental Health Check with our vet nurses
✅ 10% OFF any recommended dental procedures
✅ A complimentary Dental Info Pack + a take-home oral care goodie (Virbac CET Home Dental Kit, Veggiedent, Aquadent or Maxiguard OraZn Gel) to help you keep up the care at home.

📅 Offer ends August 31st 2025.

FINAL DAY! Today is your last chance to book a consult for your senior pet to ensure you receive all the savings of the Exclusive Seniors Package.

If your senior pet (cat or dog over the age of 8 years) is showing signs of slowing down or discomfort, now's the time to act. Take advantage of our Package to ensure they get the care they deserve! Here's what we're offering and how it works:

1. Consultation and full veterinary clinical examination (unavailable on weekends at Amberley).

2. Wellness screening blood tests (equivalent to PreGA screening blood tests in-house). These will be taken during the consult.

3. Detailed urine analysis and faecal examination for worm eggs and parasites. Both samples will need to be brought to the consult, so prior you will need to collect containers and instructions from your local clinic.

4. When the results are available you will receive a follow-up phone-call from your vet to discuss the findings and provide any recommendations.

5. 10% of any recommended procedures (X-rays, dentistry, surgery) - these must be booked during the promotion period and completed before the end of July.

In the photo above, we are excited to show you the progress of the new clinic being built beside our current location on the main road in Cheviot. This is a major investment by Ian Page (Vet, NCVC Director and developer) and North Canterbury Vets in the town of Cheviot, demonstrating a commitment to the future of providing veterinary services for both companion and production animals.
It will provide a modern purpose-built facility designed to deliver the latest in veterinary medicine and attract new talent in order to provide a sustainable veterinary service for the community. More news to come as the project moves forward.

Bearings - not just a pain in the backside for the sheep

Managing bearings can be tricky, and sadly, as much as we have tried, there is no silver bullet to prevent them. This is because the cause of bearings is multifactorial – meaning there are a number of different things that can contribute to a ewe getting a bearing, and they are not all necessarily the same thing each time, making it very hard to prevent them.
Examples of potential causes:
• Fat sheep.
• Ewes carrying multiple lambs.
• Ewes sitting down on a hill (bum facing down hill, so all the organs push down the va**na).
• Giving salt at pre-lamb causing them to drink more and increase their bladder size (some people find salt stops them though?!?!).
• Ewes putting on condition mid-pregnancy.
• The list continues…
However, one more reliable pattern where we do seem to see more is in a good feed year, when ewes may be putting weight on in mid-pregnancy, and are in very good condition before lambing.
Lots of people have different theories and ideas on how to manage bearings, but regardless, we can’t always stop them. So, how should we be treating them to get the best results?
Of course, some do die, despite all our efforts. Therefore, some of you may choose to cull ewes with a bearing, and humane euthanasia is an adequate choice in these situations. However, for those who do wish to try and treat a ewe with a bearing, we have found some success in using anti-inflammatories.
Once you have replaced the bearing, and placed your harness or spoon on the ewes, by giving the ewe an injection of long acting anti-inflammatory such as Meloxicam (Metacam or Reliven, for example), what we find is that she is less likely to push the bearing back out again, and will start eating and concentrating on her lambs.
If you would like to trial this on your farm, Meloxicam is an RVM product, so you will need to discuss getting some from your local NCVC vet.
