Today at our Teaching Hospital, we performed a life-saving blood transfusion in a Japanese Spitz named Kimchi. The patient presented with severe weakness and pale mucous membranes, and a complete blood count revealed marked anemia with an RBC count of only 1.53 million/ยตL.
After blood typing and cross-matching, a compatible donor was selected and whole blood transfusion was administered under continuous monitoring. Kimchi responded well during the procedure, with gradual improvement in perfusion and activity.
This case highlights the importance of quick diagnosis, proper transfusion protocols, and supportive care in managing severe anemia in small-breed dogs.
