Anna’s signature technique “From Walk to Piaffe” is based on using conscious muscle relaxation in order to activate tendon-based movement and teach the horse how to shift from using kinetic horizontal energy of the walk to using vertical energy needed for piaffe.
The “vertical front leg” in Piaffe and lighter front is a sign that the horse indeed started to use his tendons to cumulate and release energy, allowing him to lift up his body better, and that the horse stopped doing piaffer by just jumping from leg to leg without usage of tendons, and only using muscles. When the horse only uses his muscles for piaffe then he becomes tense, and piaffe is very difficult. Horses piaffing using only muscles get angry and cranky doing it. When the horse learns to piaffe on tendons the movement becomes pleasurable and light because it leads to further relaxation of the body, and horses start to be playful and light on legs.
You can also see that he is shorter in the body (better compact frame) and that the horse lifts his back better — this is because when the horse starts to use tendons in the legs, he also starts to use tendons along the spine and the back can connect front and back of the horse better and start to serve as a major transferrer of the energy flow through the body.
