Lateral movements don’t have to be complicated.

Many people think shoulder-in, haunches-in and other lateral movements are only for high-level dressage riders…

But at the heart of it, it’s actually very simple:

Can you invite the shoulders towards you and away from you?
Can you invite the haunches towards you and away from you?

When your horse starts to understand these simple building blocks, you can use them to help your horse become straighter, more balanced and easier to guide.

If the shoulders fall out, you can invite them back.
If the haunches drift away, you can invite them back.

This is why I love teaching lateral movements from the ground.
Not as “fancy dressage exercises,” but as clear communication that helps your horse understand their own body.

I’ll be teaching more about this in my free masterclass:

A Balanced Horse in Mind & Body
June 18th

Join me if you want to learn how groundwork and lateral movements can help your horse build strength, confidence and healthy movement from the ground.

Bringing 8 horses in for the night… every single one has their own character.

The whole group: “Yes, let’s go.”

Jajão: “I will come when I am emotionally ready.”😄

Jajão likes his alone time (like me…).

Do you have a horse in your herd who always does things in his or her own timing?

The biggest shift in my liberty training:

I stopped asking,
“How do I make my horse stay with me?”

And started asking,
“How do I become someone my horse wants to stay with?”

Because liberty is not true liberty if the horse is only staying to avoid more pressure.

So I give my horse the option to say no.

He can walk away.
He can choose.

And then I don’t chase.
I don’t correct.

I wait.
I become quiet inside.

And I use that moment to check in with myself.

Am I grounded?
Am I soft?
Am I safe to return to?

And when my horse chooses to come back to me…

I say thank you.

Because he trusted.

That is the kind of liberty I want.

Not “stay with me or else.”
But “you are free to leave, and I will still be a safe place to return to.”

That changes everything.

What is your biggest struggle with liberty training? Let me know in the comments.

You are closer than you think to becoming the human your horse wants to be with. 🤍

Not by doing more.
Not by trying harder.
But by coming back to the small things that build trust.

Start here:

1. Regulate yourself first
Before training, grooming, or even getting your horse from the field, notice your own energy. Are you tense? Rushed? Frustrated? Your horse reads all of it. Just shake it off and ground yourself.

2. Listen to the little “no’s”.
A turned head, tight lips, walking away, tension in the body… it’s all communication. Recognize the subtle signals and notice your horse’s energy. Then respond in a way that makes them feel safe. Maybe move away, or just turn your belly away. See what happens. A deep sigh, a head that drops.

3. Make your ask smaller
So often, we ask too much, too fast. Break it down. Give your horse the chance to say, “I understand.” Allow them time to process before asking the next thing.

Horses are not looking for a perfect human. They are looking for a safe one.

Because when your horse feels safe, they can soften.
And when they soften, they trust
And when they trust… everything becomes possible.
And that can start today. 🐴✨

Save this for the next time you go to your horse. 🤍

I used to think regulation meant being calm.

But I’ve learned — through my own nervous system and through my horse Jajão — that regulation is not about staying calm all the time.

It’s about having the tools to come back into the ‘green zone’.

Back from tension, from overwhelm, from shutdown

Into a state where you feel safe, open to connect and ready to learn.

And our horses need this too.

They don’t need us to be perfect.
They need us to understand what is happening in their nervous system, so we can support them instead of correcting them.

That is why I created the PLAYSAFE principles.

They help you recognize where your horse is in the nervous system, and what you can do in that moment to create safety, connection and learning.

Comment PLAYSAFE and I’ll send you the free ebook + a real-life video example with practical steps you can use in your daily life with your horse.

Because training becomes so much easier and more fun when we stop fighting the nervous system — and start working with it.

People have been asking how Jajão is doing after his heartbreaking goodbye when Seni crossed the rainbow bridge 🌈

He’s actually doing fine❤️.

I think he found some new friends, and I believe he even has a girlfriend😍.

Watch how Jajão is starting a new life, being outside 24/7 in a mixed herd of 8 horses.

I’m so happy for him!

True liberty is not about making your horse stay with you.

It is about creating safety, trust and connection, so your horse wants to be with you.

That’s one of the lessons Seni taught me.
About presence, about playfulness and about joy.

The kind of liberty that can only grow from trust.

When your horse feels safe with you…
when being with you feels good…
then staying is no longer something you have to ask for.

That is where the magic begins💛

On April 25 I’m hosting a free webinar to honor Seni’s legacy and share the lessons he taught me about trust, connection, liberty and joy.

Last week I made the hardest decision ever.

I knew this day would come one day, but to decide about life or death is just almost impossible to do.

Over the past 5 years, since his castration at the age of 15, we have been dealing with several health issues. Lymphatic, hormonal, lameness. I know that castration at a later age is full of risks, but sometimes you have no choice.

I retired him from training last year but we still went for walks and an occasional trail ride. For the lymphatic problems he should move more, but because he was not sound, I could only walk him.

A few months ago I thought I was going to lose him already. He did not want to walk at all anymore.

But then, with supplements, different food, not being stabled at night…

There was more life again. A spark in his eye.

This last week his belly has swollen so much, and there is fluid throughout his whole system now. He kept looking at his belly and then to me as if he was asking me for help.

Another visit to the vet, several tests, probably kidney failure.

I took him home. To have another day in the field. To stay with him for the night. To tell him how much I love him over and over again. To make sure Jajão could be with him.

Saying goodbye to Seni has been one of the hardest things I have ever done. But it was equally hard on Jajão.

Seeing how Jajão said goodbye was deeply touching, beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.

He gently touched Seni’s nose and then stood motionless for 2 hours with his friend, as if Seni’s spirit was still around. Then I saw him tremble on his legs and lie down next to Seni. Was that the moment Seni really left us?

I don’t have any tears left. A sense of calm has come over me...

He was such a beautiful soul, forever in my heart❤❤

I know he touched many hearts. If he touched yours, I would love to hear it🙏

Gentle warning: footage of Seni after he passed in the video.

It’s not discipline.
It has become a ritual😍

This morning: mist, birds, geese, quiet… during my walk along the river.

I call it a ritual, not a routine.

Because a routine is something you try to fit into your day or add to your to do list.

A ritual becomes part of who you are.

This daily morning walk helps me regulate, breathe, and arrive in myself before the day begins.

And that is exactly the feeling behind my 5-minute Calm Arrival Ritual before doing anything with your horse.

Just a simple way to drop from the thinking mind into the feeling body…

Because when you arrive differently, your horse will feel that.

And often, everything that follows becomes softer, easier, and more connected.

I turned it into a little course together with the PLAYSAFE principles, a PLAYSAFE starter kit bundle😍

I hear so often:
“When I want to train my horse, what exercises should I do?”

But often the better question is:
“How safe do I feel in my body right now?”
Because when your nervous system is bracing, your horse feels that. Especially after a scare, a fall, or a loss of confidence…

When you are holding your breath, your horse feels that too.
And when you soften, regulate, and arrive fully… your horse can soften with you.
Horses don’t need us to be perfect, they need us to be present.

And presence comes from safety.

Safety in your body.
Safety in your horse’s body.
Safety in the space between you.

That is the heart of my brand new PLAYSAFE ebook:

8 gentle principles to help you create calm, confidence and playful togetherness with your horse.
