Do you want to train your horse in a way that’s based on biomechanics and understand why they move in a particular way? Do you struggle with contact and find you have one stronger rein, or that your horse leans on or resists contact? Or are you simply looking to improve your own skills so you can be the best trainer for your horse? 🐴

Whatever your reasons, we believe that sustainable training begins with insight. And that’s what our 4D Training Weekend is all about.

Whatever level of riding you’re at, join us from 25-27 September in Laag Soeren, and you and your horse can work directly with vet and trainer Karin Leibbrandt, equine behaviourist Lydia van Oosten, and rider’s seat, posture and balance specialist Tessa Roos for a weekend of learning. 🎓

Friday evening opens by bringing theory and practice together. You’ll watch demos by our 4D trainers and learn how to apply what you learn in the classroom to what you’re doing in the arena.

Saturday is about learning, experiencing, and practical application, whether that’s with your own horse or, if you’re joining as a spectator, from the ground. You’ll have a one-on-one ‘Joker’ session to help refine your position in the saddle and work on your balance and seat. This is followed by an evening seminar where you’ll delve into hypermobility; how to spot it, how it affects horses, and how to train the hypermobile horse.

Sunday is a second practical session, with time to ride and learn alongside the other riders there and to put the new insights into practice under the guidance of the trainers. We’ll focus on training the horse to fully coordinate their body and how you can improve the quality and evenness of your contact to fully connect with your horse.

You don't need any prior experience with the 4D method. Just bring your horse and an open mind. And if you don’t have a horse, you can still join the weekend. Attend as a spectator and learn from every horse and rider combo. There are also options to attend the lecture portions of the weekend.

🐴 Equine trainers and practitioners: do you ever look at a horse and see the compensation before your client does? How many times have you watched the same pattern turn up in a different horse, a different client, and felt like you need a new way of working with them? 🤔

This is precisely where our upcoming 4D Training Weekend can help. This in-person event, taking place in the Netherlands this September, will teach you how to turn biomechanical theory into real-life practice that you can apply in your teaching and training.

Led by Karin Leibbrandt (DVM, 22 years in equine rehabilitation and retraining), together with behavioural trainer Lydia van Oosten and rider’s seat, posture, and balance specialist Tessa Roos, you’ll understand how the horse's body moves and why compensations occur, so you can make better choices regarding training, guidance, and management.

Friday evening opens with demonstrations from some of our 4D trainers, working with horse-and-rider combinations across different levels.

Saturday is theory-tiered, with practical training, one-to-one coaching on ‘Joker’ focusing on your riding position, followed by an evening seminar on equine hypermobility: how to recognise it and understand what it means in terms of training.

Sunday is a second practical session, with time to learn from Karin and Lydia.

Bring your own horse (or a client’s horse), and you can apply what you learn in practice, or come as a spectator and learn from every horse and rider pair.

You can see how your horse moves. But can you also recognise why they move in a particular way, and what that actually means for training?

In our 4D Biomechanics & Performance Trainer PRO course, you'll learn to observe and analyse movement patterns, and turn these observations into training that works for the horse in front of you. It's the ultimate in-depth resource for professionals and highly motivated riders and owners with a basic understanding of anatomy, biomechanics, and sound training principles.

You'll work through biomechanics, balance, lateral flexion, core stability, anatomy, and training progression. And you'll understand what shapes movement beyond the horse itself: from conformation, hoof balance, rider balance, saddle fit, nutrition, behaviour, and load-bearing capacity.

But the real skill is connecting everything. What do you see? What might be causing it? And how does this translate into a training method that ensures your horse stays happy and healthy?

That's exactly what this course teaches you.

It's practice-oriented, taught in small groups so you get one-on-one direction, and combines theory with extensive hands-on practice, analysis, and training.

We're excited to share that our very own Lydia van Oosten is a judge at the Groundwork Competition with Horse Event this coming September! 🏆

This isn't a competition about speed or spectacular tricks, but about a harmonious partnership between human and horse - something we promote through all our training programmes.

Lydia's been working her way through all of the submissions, and 4 finalists will take compete at Horse Event. They'll need to demonstrate subtle aids and guide their horse through various exercises, where calmness, precision, and mutual understanding are central.

🎟 Horse Event runs Sep 12 - 13 at EXPO Greater, Amsterdam and if you haven't got your ticket yet, there's still time to attend!

Relaxation in training. What does it really mean? 🤔

Horse-friendly training means a relaxed horse. But relaxed doesn't mean low energy.

A relaxed horse isn’t half-asleep, head low, yawning. He can't anticipate the rider's questions or react to changing circumstances.

Movement loses energy. Extension drops through the hind and front legs. The neck can't lengthen, and the back becomes hollow and unstable.

The opposite extreme is just as unhelpful.

A horse in a highly anxious state runs on fight or flight. Stress hormones flood the system. He loses the ability to learn, or even to do movements he already knows.

Stress hormones aren't the enemy. We need them too, to move, to focus, to get through the day. Horses need some stress hormones to stay attentive and able to learn. The problem is too much, not their presence.

What we're after is an attentive horse with enough energy and power that training feels effortless. A horse that trusts his rider, his environment, and his own body.

Confident. Effortless. Attentive.

That's relaxed.

Find out more about how we train for this. 🐎

Serieus over suiker!

Serious about sugar!

Overweight in horses isn't just that they're a little on the heavy side. It has a huge impact on the horse's entire body.
Many owners tell us: "my horse is a little spoiled." And we understand that as an owner you might not realize that your horse isn't actually doing that well, because better a bit too chubby than too skinny, right?

Let's take a look at what impact being overweight has on the horse:

- The horse has a really nice shock-absorbing and spring system in its legs. This system is put under more strain by excess weight, which can lead to injuries.
- The horse is specialized in covering long distances, and for that, it has a connective tissue system that works like a bouncy ball. A bouncy ball keeps bouncing for a long time once you let it go, and the horse's body works the same way. Mostly, the body bounces back on its own. The horse just has to add a little bit of energy.
The horse is therefore dependent on well-functioning connective tissue. Sugar has a negative effect on, among other things, the elasticity of the connective tissue. In addition, too much sugar intake leads to low-grade inflammation in the connective tissue, which reduces its quality and function.

- Overweight horses quickly run into problems with their overall sugar metabolism. This can escalate to the point where a horse develops laminitis, but more often I see more subtle issues. A horse that is a bit sensitive on its feet, but no clear signs of (acute) laminitis. A horse that moves stiffly, improves during the training, but has a longer recovery time. Bloodwork often doesn’t show a clear increase in muscle enzymes.

- Overweight horses often have muscles that feel bloated. These are hard to loosen during myofascial release treatments. The tissue is tough and stiff and doesn’t respond well to techniques aimed at getting movement in the tissue.

These horses are also often a bit down and hard to motivate to go start moving, a little phlegmatic and getting out of breath more quickly. This all has to do with the stiffening and quicker acid buildup in the muscles, the low-grade inflammation that isn’t just in the connective tissue but throughout the whole body.

These horses just don’t feel completely fit, like they have a mild flu without the actual flu symptoms like coughing and a runny nose, but still that tired feeling, especially when they have to move. These horses often don’t test positive when you measure insulin and muscle enzymes are usually just slightly elevated at most. That’s actually a good thing because it makes it easier to turn things around, but that doesn’t mean it’s not serious for the horse.

- Due to a disturbance of the gut microbiome because of too much sugar intake, toxins are formed in the intestines. These toxins get absorbed, enter the bloodstream and contribute to that flu-like feeling and low-grade inflammation.

Even if your horse is only mildly overweight and doesn’t seem to have serious symptoms at first glance, a lot could already be going on.

That’s why it’s important to take sugar and excess weight seriously. A horse is better off a bit on the lean side than a bit overweight! Nowadays, many people have a strong opinion on this. We should take good care of horses, so a slightly excessive feeding condition is fine, but from a health perspective, that’s definitely not the case.

The metabolism of the horse is by nature adapted to a period of low food intake. During this period the horse uses it’s reserves to stay alive. The horse goes through this cycle of storing and using its reserves every year. If we are overfeeding our horses, the metabolism gets blocked in storage mode and over time it will be more and more difficult to reverse this situation. Therefore it is very important to take good care of your horse, but not by spoiling him with too much food or food that contains too much sugar!

What changes when the horse comes first? 🐴

Here's what training often looks like before that shift.

Recurrent injuries. Lameness that keeps shifting, treatment after treatment, with no real progress, a frustrated horse and rider. 😫

What we've learned in our many years of training and rehabilitating horses is that these issues are almost always rooted in imbalance and a myofascial system that was never taught to function correctly.

When that root cause is addressed, the lameness stops cycling. Posture changes. The horse feels lighter and balanced, and the training finally starts to work.

That's the shift our training courses are built on. Real horses, real people, and real results ❤

Our beautiful mare Nora has come on so well in her training ❤

When we first met Nora, her owners couldn't show her under saddle because of her behaviour. She did a combination of refusing to go forward, rearing up, turning 180 degrees, followed by a small buck. This was too much for the young girl who was riding her - and probably for a lot of people! They'd taken her to a clinic where nothing significant was found, and so they were searching for a new place for her.

When we started her training, we saw a lot of tail swishing, and although she would move forward, she still had the brakes on, both of which were clear indications that something wasn’t right. She was also very heavy on the forehand and would shorten her neck and hollow her back, so she wasn't using her body functionally.

Through thoughtful training, which included a lot of work outside of the arena, time on the beach and long, straight walks in the forest, we've seen some wonderful progression. Our goal is to continue working on her canter, maintaining balance, especially through the turns, and lengthening her neck by keeping her moving forward.

In biomechanical terms, this means we must activate the thoracic sling and help her organise her body, find her balance, and gain positive tension. It's important to remember that activation of the thoracic sling is part of the posture when a horse is moving in a biomechanically healthy way. In other words, it's not something you simply teach your horse, but rather something that happens when a horse is fully balanced in its movement. It's not always easy to achieve, but as you can see with Nora, it's so rewarding to see a horse start using her body correctly.

🎓 If you're interested in learning more, join us in person from September 25 to 27 for our 4D Training Weekend. You'll get two full days of demos, practical training, and personal guidance. Learn to understand why your horse moves the way he does, and discover how you can immediately apply this knowledge to your daily training.

Note: this particular weekend will be taught in Dutch, but everyone is welcome to join! ☺

Love, Karin and Lydia x
