WOOF & WOW

WOOF & WOW WOOF & WOW is developing a new material for commercial designs, made from old plastic bottles and made by weavers in the suburbs of Peru.

Peru heeft, zoals veel groeiende economien, te kampen met een groeiend afval probleem als gevolg van toenemend consumentisme van de opkomende middenklasse. In 2021 zal het afval dat het gemiddeld huishouden dagelijks op straat gooit gestegen zijn van 800g naar 2kg. Op dit moment wordt maar 5% daarvan gerecycled. (bron) Van al dit afval vormt plastic de grootste bedreiging voor het millieu. Momente

el is 90% van al het afval dat de zee vervuilt plastic (UNEP 2011). De recycling waarde-keten in Peru begint met een grote onderlaag van informele groepen "recicladors" die het afval verzamelen en doorverkopen. Deze mensen aan de rand van de samenleving zijn essentieel om het afval probleem te bestrijden. Door deze mensen in staat te stellen producten te maken van het afval kan er door hen meer aan verdient worden en zal dit ook anderen motiveren om hetzelfde te gaan doen. "De weef traditie in Peru combineren met recycling van PET flessen om een uniek materiaal te creeren voor producten." Peruaanse weefsels zijn een belangrijk cultureel erfgoed en export product van het land. De weef traditie is dan ook nog het sterkst bij de jongste generaties (en armste) die in de suburbs van de stad zijn gaan wonen. WOOF & WOW werkt samen met het ontwerpbureau Better Future Factory die low-tech recycling tools maakt die toepasselijk zijn in dit soort contexten. Met die tools kunnen PET flessen worden gesneden tot draad waar vervolgens weer mee geweven kan worden. Dit draad wordt door de handen van de weefsters een uniek materiaal dat sterk, duurzaam en mooi is. De gemeenschap kan hierdoor zichzelf van producten voorzien waar dat eerst niet mogelijk of te duur was. De volgende stap: Product Design

Het nieuwe materiaal kan lokaal worden toegepast maar leent zich ook voor allerlei innovatieve nieuwe product ontwerpen. WOOF & WOW heeft daarom als volgende stap bepaalt om het materiaal te gaan promoten onder product ontwerpers. Deze krijgen de kans om een product te ontwerpen van een uniek materiaal en dit te laten produceren in Peru.

WOW!! Look at the first tests Dehlia, Lina, Martha and Rosio have made! They did not only weave the seating, but also personalized it with a self-designed and hand-knitted finishing. Even though their patterns are very intrinsical, it took them little time to make. But more importantly they really enjoy the knitting. We love it, and would love to know what you think of their work!

Every beginning has its obstacles, especially when you are pioneering, and get distracted by cute dogs craving for attention. It took some time to set up the loom properly, but the weavers, or tejedoras in spanish, managed to make a first sample of the seating. And they did a great job, didn't they?!

Finally back in Peru!! This time we brought reinforcement from Holland named River, who is not only a true help but a great addition in general. At the Aloardi house in Lima, where we happily reside, we fixed some last enhancements to the weaving loom, using an acient technique for drilling holes.

Finally, after quite some time of prototyping and arranging, we are heading back to Manchay, Lima in Peru!! Together with women from Ayllu Ruwasunchis we are going to make 8 pieces of Marta Sif Ólafsdóttir's PETro, the little stool, and hope to share our knowledge with interested parties in Lima as well.
Right now, we are preparing for our trip to Peru, but we keep you updated!

Our lovely Marta is back from Iceland and we are now making the final steps to finish the design. We have wool from Peru...

Our lovely Marta is back from Iceland and we are now making the final steps to finish the design. We have wool from Peru thanks to a good friend and Andri strength tested the design until 140kg. We wonder how much until it breaks. Maybe the frame will break before the PET? We will let you know. ;)
