🐴This week's reflection…🐴
➡️ "Why are you keeping your horse in kindergarten?”
It's a comment we've heard more than once about horses that remain in the hackamore—and from your comments and messages recently, many of you have heard it too.
So let's talk about it.
A young horse started in the hackamore will, of course, begin in "kindergarten."
Every young horse does.
But the hackamore isn't kindergarten. It's simply the tool through which the horse is being educated.
Collection, refinement, advanced movements, working cattle and increasingly subtle communication can all continue to develop in the hackamore.
Changing equipment does not graduate the horse -
Education does.
In the traditional California progression, the hackamore may lead to the two rein and ultimately the bridle. But that doesn't mean every horse MUST leave the hackamore to become highly educated.
Some progress to the bridle. Others remain in the hackamore for many years—or even their entire lives.
One of Jeff's students rides a cow horse mare now in her mid-twenties who has spent her entire ridden life in the hackamore. Her education certainly didn't stop when she was young.
➡️ The hackamore can be where an education begins without being where education ends.
So if you've ever been made to question whether you're "holding your horse back" by remaining in the hackamore, don't measure your horse's education by what's on its head.
Look at the horse.
Is the communication becoming quieter?
Is the horse becoming more balanced, responsive, collected and capable?
Those things tell us far more about a horse's education than the equipment ever could.
Have you ever been told you SHOULD move your horse out of the hackamore?
We'd love to hear your experience—because your story may be exactly what another rider needs to hear.

The end of an era; this weekend was the last time we organised a clinic with Jeff Sanders in Friesland. After 11 years and 16 clinics it is time for us to move on, this time to another country. The clinic, like all the other times was a great succes. Wonderful participants, beautiful horses, 25 great calves and of course Jeff giving his best. The weather was great, apart from a thunderstorm on Saturday. The food was great.
The cherry on the cake were the last two lessons in which groups of four riders got to work with all 25 calves; what great horses we have.
But for all fans, Jeff will be back in the Netherlands next year, as the orgianization is taken over by one of the ladies who has particpated a few times. She'll let everybody know how, when and what ;-).

We are moving to France and, if we can find the right place, we will get Jeff there too!

We had fun, these adult pony-camps are impossible to beat I guess! We have fond memories of these clinics and all the people that joined. Keep up the good stuff and keep riding like a true Vaquero.

A special thanks for Jeff from me as he made my dream come true and he helped me make a great horse that goes in the two rein and on occasion "straight up in the bridle" like a true pro and worked cows like a real Vaquero ranch horse; Sweet Spot of Cash is his name.
