10 years and an entire ocean separate these moments but they fill my heart in the same way.

Sansa primed me dog ownership. She was there for me when my life fell apart the first time. Wibble is here for me as my life is upheaved again...

He gets to reap the benefits of the education Sansa (and Flash) gave me.

"Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught."

Don't trick your dogs into taking medication...

When Flash went on Fluoxetine at around 18 months old, I swore to myself it wouldn't be a daily fight. I knew that potentially he would need this medication for the rest of his life (he did), and I knew I didn't want a daily argument about it.

You see, Sansa (wee bitch that she was) was savvy to every trick in the book when it came to skulldugery and pill-trickery.. she was my first dog and my oldest living dog (11.5 years!) and medicating her was the bane of my existence.

Cue Wibble, stage left and his chronic back pain that kinda began surfacing last summer..
He takes medication for this chronic pain 2-3x a day and he has HUMONGOUS feelings about food in that itty bitty body of his....

So teaching him to take his medication like Flash did wasn't going to be an easy task. You see I'm lazy... so instead we made a post-meal ritual for "WibWob's med time". This is what this ritual looks like.

He knows exactly what's up every step of the way, and it's barely a conversation let alone an argument. He truly is the best little man.

Flash of Brilliance has been undergoing a bunch of changes, and Max and I have had to cope with quite a bit of change, loss, newness, and hope.

We're looking forward to serving a new in person community while continuing to support our global community online.

We couldn't have survived this huge upheaval without the love and support of our friends. Thank you.

Welcome to our favorite series where we bring you along on our city walks every Wednesday. We can't wait to bring you along as we explore !!

Come along to Wibble's favorite park, Van Der Werf park - just a 5 minute walk from our place. Here he gets to explore off leash to stretch his legs, read the community pee-mail, and socialize with dogs of all sorts and their people.

Watching him interact with appropriate and confident dogs is so delightful and a healing experience after being immersed in the US dog culture for so long. He is appropriately told off when he's being rude, but it's a non-issue. The dogs are saying "hey its cool, just don't do *that* okay?" And Wibble is absolutely respectful of their boundaries.

We try to get out every morning or evening to make sure he (and we) get to touch some grass every day. It isn't the same as the forests of New England but I love that its so close to home and easy to get to!

It was a "scortcha" this past week in the Netherlands.
It got up to 37°C (98.6°F) during the day and didnt go below 22°C (71.6°F) at night. We also don't have Air Con in our 3rd floor apartment that was designed to trap in heat.

Now as a desert dweller, I love the heat. As a disabled person, my body cannot tolerate the heat anymore.

Max is in the same boat except they never really liked the heat.

Wibble loves the heat, but he's brachycephalic and the extreme heat isn't good nor safe for him.

Here's how we kept Wibble safe and comfortable during the heatwave.

• We got out early- before 8am- most days. The rest of the days were forced rest days for all of us.

• We bought a fan - it helped us stay comfortable. I didn't expect it to make the difference it made.

• We froze damp cooling towels and used them when our body temps were rising. I expected Wibble to hate this but he actually loved it.

• We used shoes for his unavoidable midday potty walks. We live in the city center, surrounded by cobblestone roads. There is no easy access to dirt or grass without first walking there. Wibble has a small bladder that needs to be emptied more frequently to avoid UTIs. Which means: short midday potty breaks. He doesn't love the shoes but tolerates and walks in them well.

• We made sure he had constant access to cool fresh water and made sure he drank regularly.

• We froze tiny itty bitty lickmats smothered in yogurt, banana, and peanut butter for a delicious cool treat after his unavoidable potty breaks (we had popcicles ourselves).

• We left the sweltering apartment during the hottest periods of the hottest days and sought refuge in cafes and co-working spaces - anywhere that was cooler that would allow Wibble to come with us.

• Lastly, and this one wasn't my favorite but it was necessary for all our safety in the extreme heat: we invested in a portable AC. This was a heavy investment but without it, I don't think Wibble (or us for that matter) would've stayed safe on the hottest day & night of the heatwave. Thankfully it is a one time investment and it made such a huge difference. Its not an accessible choice for everyone and I'm grateful we were able to get it.
