Did you know that parasitic worms (helminths) affect the majority of grazing livestock worldwide โ causing major productivity losses and increasing pressure on animal health systems? ๐๐๐
For decades, control has depended heavily on anthelmintic drugs. ๐ But today, anthelmintic resistance is rising fast, threatening the effectiveness of one of the livestock sectorโs most relied-upon tools. โ ๏ธ
This is not a future problem โ itโs already happening. โณ
๐ The challenge:
How do we maintain productivity while reducing drug dependence and protecting long-term sustainability?
The answer is not a single solution, but a combination of strategies. ๐
The SPARC initiative proposes a โbasket of optionsโ โ a set of sustainable, practical tools that can be adapted to different farming systems: ๐งบ๐ฑ
โข Targeted and targeted selective treatments ๐ฏ
โข Grazing and pasture management ๐พ
โข Diagnostics-based decision making (e.g. FEC) ๐ฌ
โข Breeding for parasite resistance ๐งฌ
โข Bioactive plants with natural antiparasitic effects ๐ฟ
โข Use of predatory fungi to reduce pasture contamination ๐
โข Vaccination (where available) ๐
Individually, these tools help.
Combined, they can transform how we manage parasites. ๐
๐ Less drug use
๐ Sustained productivity
๐ฑ Improved environmental impact
If youโre part of the livestock sector โ farmer, vet, advisor or researcher โ now is the time to rethink parasite control. ๐ค
