First egg of the New Year being laid. The first one in months, they quit laying after the chickenpox misery. Happy to see that even with these four minutes of extra daylight they feel alive again!

Before we know it they will be broody again 🙈

We share benches, and sunlight as well. There is not too much of it these last weeks but if it’s out we settle for time sharing. Big chickens half a day and bantams the other half. Oh well, half a day is three hours now. Anyway, we all enjoy.

Got ourselves new Cochins. Fowlpox killed five of our older ones and we reckon that the coop is too big for seven chickies to keep warm in winter.

Got four a few weeks ago and kept them in quarantaine. Placed them in the big group today and like always it’s a chicken pecking order mess.

Also as always it will sort itself out. These few days, we collect them at dark and place them on the roost, cut some wing ends because they fly better than we noticed before. Only to notice that we do need to close a corner because they will sh*t on each other.

Happy to see that that don’t hate each other. At least not when it’s dark.

After the fowlpox outbreak we are left with only five big chickens and seven bantams.

Somewhere we found four new bantams to help keep the coop warm in winter. For now they are quarantined next to the house but since the former keeper kept them in small boxes they are a little scared of open spaces. They’ll learn and supports them by sitting next to them. Then they venture out a little further.

Our flocks suffer. A month ago we lost four Cochins to something unknown. They were healthy, they were not, they died. The remaining seven are their old self again, apart from that they don’t lay but at least they eat, run and talk.

Three weeks later was last week. One big chicken found dead. Another one weak. Yet another one died and now Jacqueline, our fierce mistress of the house, died as well. We may lose them all.

The vet didn’t find anything but we suspect fowl pox. It’s a tragedy.

On Tuesday a black chick died, out of the blue. She just died at night. Monday evening we noticed strange behavior by the speckled one, on the left on this picture. She was a top hen but now she tried to comfort herself by tucking under the wing of one of her sisters. Funny head behavior as well. This morning the skin on her head looked like the color of cooked liver. She died today.

The rest seems to be okay but it is too much a coincidence to have two chicks on the rainbow bridge within two days. The vet is analyzing the manure but so far no conclusions made.

Our high flying bird. A lot of noise and there she sat but she seemed unhappy with the experience. I took her down, she raffled her feathers and went on.

We changed the bedding from h**p to sand. Just to find out what’s better. Our chickens completely about the p**s “We don’t want no sand in our nest boxes”
