Rabbits are versatile

Rabbits are pretty versatile. Here are 8 things you can do with your rabbits.

1. You can sell them as pets.

2. You can sell them to people who show rabbits.

3. You can raise them for meat to consume with your family.

4. You can sell them for meat (either already processed or live) depending on customer preference.

5. You can sell the well tanned pelts to shoe makers or use it your self for different fashion items.

6. You can sell them to raw feeders. There are lots of people who feed their pets raw meat but don’t want to, or can’t, raise it all themselves.

7. You can sell the heads and legs. people can use it to feed their dogs.

8. You can use or sell the rabbit dropping and urine for gardening. It’s great fertilizer.

SIGNS THAT YOUR RABBIT IS PREGNANT

Many rabbit farmers and lovers pose a question; what signs should I look out for to know if my rabbit pregnant? Being able to recognize a pregnant doe early will help you to make adequate preparation for proper delivery and care of the coming kits, lack of adequate preparation could cause a lot of damage on the doe and the kits. Here are few sign and symptoms of a pregnant rabbit

1. The first sign of pregnancy in rabbits is mood change, your rabbit may become irritable or aggressive

2. Weight gain: Rabbits tend to gain more weight once they take in; it is
more obvious to the eye from day 14 when the foetus in the womb starts to
take form and shape.

3. Palpation: This can be done between day 11 and 14, you can put your fingers on the pregnant rabbit's belly (known as palpating) to the foetuses as small lumps. Avoid moving or carrying the rabbit mother-to-be after 14 days because it could cause an accidental abortion.

4. Strange Sound: Whenever a buck(male) approach her she tends to make strange sounds, attempt to mate or even fight the male in order to keep him at bay.

5. Rabbits tend to eat less or even more as the case may be

6. Swollen abdomen: You may notice the rabbit prefers to lie on its side because of this.

7. Less movement, rabbits tend to limit their movement during pregnancy

8. Fur pulling and nesting: It usually begins around day 28, or three days before giving birth. When you notice your rabbit pulling fur or making a nest, this is a clear sign that she will give birth within a couple of days. The rabbit might pull her own fur with her teeth to make a soft and comfortable bed infused with her scent for the expected kits

9. Labour(kindling) and birth: Rabbits usually give birth at night or in the early hours of the morning hours, although they can also do so at some other time. The key is for them to feel safe and know that they will not be interrupted or disturbed.

*LESSONS FROM THE NEW ERA IN NIGERIA RABBITRY.*
1) RHD saga really have brought some huge loss into the industry
2 ) There is a huge shortage in numbers of quality stocks available in the industry
3) It is an understatement to say that people are discouraged and have been backing off the industry. In the past few weeks we have emptied so many farms of people who are discouraged and they are even selling their cages
4 ) Manipulation of feed formulas and lower quality of feeds also wreaking a massive havoc in the industry
5 ) Incessant increase in prices of feeds as a result of continuous increase the price of feed ingredients.
6) Lower demand of breeding stocks or foundation stocks, which has led to rejection of some rabbits from some farmers and unnecessary relegation of some stocks into the meat market.
7) Unnecessary increase in the prices of breeding or foundation stocks. At some point we were at #2500 and this turned to #10,000 and the truth remains that all rabbit breeders in Nigeria benefited from this! πŸ˜ƒ
*How To Restore Sanity Into The Industry*.
1) All feed producer must return to giving the best in terms of feed formulation and feed quality.
2) If it will mean an increase in feed prices, let it happen, but do make sure people get value for what they pay for, rather than reducing the quality of some feeds that is bringing huge loss to struggling farmers and also making Rabbits look marasmus!
3) I think it is high time we stopped the killing prices of foundation stocks and face achievable reality, and this will encourage some already disappointed farmers to gradually return to business. AFAD is suggesting Hylas, chinchillas, nzw and Angoras at maximum price of 5k for each weaned doe and 2k for a buck.
4) People should now learn to create market and not totally be dependent on offtakers.
5 ) The end use of every rabbit is meat. Meat market should be encouraged the more and meat prices should be increased in reality to the forces of demand.

*Maximising profit from rabbit meat production I*

There is a common saying "all rabbit will end as meat". So, whether you have a rabbit of 30,000 or 3,000, have it at the back of your mind that at one point or the other, it will end as meat.

Thus, it because necessary that one make proper plans to maximize profit in as a rabbit farmer whether dealing with exotic breeds or not.

I must say, there are no fixed rules casted in stones on how to maximize profit. What is key is making a smart decision at every point one is required to.

*Here are some tips to maximizing profit from rabbit meat production in no particular order.*

🐰 Make procurement from reliable source in terms of quality and price*

🐰 Invest in rabbit meat with very high feed to meat conversion rate

🐰 Slaughter bucks first.

🐰 Don't hesitate to slaughter unproductive does. While it is good to be hopeful, remember every failed trial is extra lost

🐰 Do not hesitate to slaughter disabled rabbits before they further deteriorate

🐰 With patience actively search for customers, who understand the value of rabbit meat and are ready to pay reasonably. Thus, do not succumb to the demand pressure.

🐰 Cutting cost incurred on feed through the use of suitable alternative cheaper feed. While it is very good to use ready made feed, it may not be the best option for affordable meat production. Remember, the cost incurred on feed accounts for over 75% of the running cost in any rabbit farm.

🐰 Prevention is better than cure. A lot of cost are spent on preventable diseases. Ordinarily, use of drugs (Orthodox) should be discouraged in rabbit bred for meat especially close to the time of slaughtering. Aside the money lost on drugs, diseases and pest may cause growth retardation or even death in some cases.
