Good evening family.I trust we all had a great day. Thanks to everyone that has said something about the topic of today.The topic is ''Is breeding good for a retirement plan or can you resign to face dog breeding''. The question in the mouth of dog breeders and enthusiasts is if dog breeding is profitable or not. Yes, dog breeding can be profitable just like any other business. Dog breeding is a project whose outcome depends on how you execute it.You need to learn about it and have mentor(s) to guide you in your journey when you are stuck. Do you have the passion,patience and financial capability to start the project? The way you plan your project will determine if it is going to be successful or not. Tibetan Mastiff is about the most expensive dog in the world, if you breed,it does not mean you are going to make it in breeding.Careful select your breed(s) through feasibility study of the market. This does not mean you cannot introduce a new breeder to the people, you must be sure that what attracts you can be appealing to the dog community. Bsquare Kennels in Jos made sense out of Saint Bernard breed which is relatively new in Nigeria.There are ethical and unethical ways of doing things, dog breeding is not an exception. You can can ensure that you make profit by: 1. Reducing the money you spend on the dogs 2. Produce more puppies that are shabbily bred(puppy miller) 3. Produce quality puppies that will earn better price in the market. The class 3 which I want us to belong to will sit and study hard on the breed(s) they are into and breed better and better by obeying the breed standard.The health and feeding of the dogs are not compromised. In addition,they belong to kennel clubs like HKRKC,Boerboel Alliance etc and attend dog shows among others. We need to love our dogs because they are living beings and they demand love. In fact they should be treated like our children. We need to be a good salesmen and marketers to sell our work. Dog breeding is hard work,we should not say because we have turned our passion into business and we now become profit obsessed and start churning out poor quality dogs.Nigerian is in recession now and people that sell luxury products are feeling the heat the most. Imagine Toyota Corrola is about 20 million Nigeria naira as at today, you can just decide to leave your old car. Rice more than three times the usual price, we have got no choice other than to buy and eat. Any business has it high and low and passion will keep us going. Having said all these, how many of us know have records to show our kennels activities? How many can say this is what I spent on the kennel and I made from the kennel in year 2016? How many have exploit the use of software to keep the records of their dogs(database showing pedigree etc, not on pedigree database)? How many have exploit software to manage the finance of the kennel, even design an excel sheet for this purpose? It is when you have a record of your performance for a certain period of time that you can decide if it worth falling back to breeding after retirement. Also if you see that you have an impressive turnover and profit as a part time breed, you may now think that if you give the 24 hours of a day and 7 days of the week to this, you can make more. Then you may quit your paid job and be a full time breeder. Without the premises to base your decision, you cannot actually make the right decision as to if breeding is good for a retirement plan or if you can resign to face dog breeding. ©Euniversal Stars Kennels 2017.
