Citified Dogs Boerboel family The Boerboel is a large, mastiff dog breed from South Africa, bred for the purpose of guarding the homestead.

These dogs were often a first line of defense against predators and were valuable in tracking and holding down wounded game. Old farmers tell many tales of the strength, agility, and courage of their Boerboels.

THE NATURE OF ROTTWIELER
The Rottweiler is a large size breed of domestic dog. the Rottweiler is primarily one of the oldest, if not the oldest of herding breeds.However, as railroads became the primary method for moving stock to market, the breed had declined so much that by 1900s there was only one female to be found in the town of Rottweil.
The buildup to World War I saw a great demand for police dogs, and that led to a revival of interest in the Rottweiler. During the First and Second World Wars, Rottweilers were put into service in various roles, including as messenger, ambulance, draught, and guard dogs.
The dogs were known as "Rottweil butchers' dogs" because they were used to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat and other products to market.
Life span: 9 to 10 years
